when
@rahema.z asked me if i wanted to share a mix for
@a_place_for initially i thought it'd be a nice idea to do a round-up of stuff that's influenced me, or what i'm listening to these days.
but then, the more we talked and the more she discussed her idea of why
@a_place_for exists, i realized its a great opportunity to kind of do a 'retrospective', a deep dive into the (slightly alarming) fact that i've been making ambient music for over a fucking decade.
there was a great question posed by
@rahema.z in the sort of mini-interview for this mix, about how i view making techno/ambient, and how these two ostensibly varying genres of music exist in my head (sidenote: do headover to
@a_place_for to read me engage in some word vomit). truth is, i make techno and ambient because its both visceral and primordial. techno brings me joy, makes me want to dance, and ambient calms me down and helps me take stock of my life or deal with whatever shit i don't actually want to deal with. jekyll and hyde but make it lamer.
sometimes, when you're a musician/producer in this shitshow of a timeline - one which forces you to constantly be present/performative/front on social media - its easy to forget that the significance/excitement/joy/comfort of making music is the making music part. not all the horseshit that comes with it, or that one's increasingly pushed into. making this mix ended up being extremely helpful in clearing up my brain of all that, and focusing instead on the music that i've made over the years, and that i will hopefully continue to make for many years. sometimes taking a step back and taking stock is actually good?!
so here we are, a kind of 1hr speed run through the different moods, sounds, textures, 'vibes' that i've been in for the past 10+ years, all through the medium of AMBIENT. i hope you enjoy it, and find it interesting, because you're literally going to be in my brain and running with me as you listen to it. link in bio etc.
