Samiljeol (삼일절) commemorates a series of resistance demonstrations on March 1, 1919, demanding independence from Japanese colonial rule. This was the start of a series of mass non-violent demonstrations across the country and around the world as part of the ongoing Korean Independence Movement, with estimates of up to 1,800 protests and millions of participants. It was led by people of all walks of life: students, laborers, merchants, and farmers. Resistance was met with brutal suppression: beatings, thousands of murders, and tens of thousands of arrests. We endured and persisted. Driven by this, our people declared independence, leading to the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.
This event is being held in solidarity with Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Venezuela, and beyond. We want to gather our Korean diaspora family and our allies in solidarity with all peoples resisting the forces of empire.
This event is a fundraiser for two families in Gz: The Abu Dayers (
@tamara_abu_dayer ) and the Khaters (
