Hello beloved fellow art and heart creatures. We have some hard news to deliver, and the task falls to me, so here I am, hoping I can reach you through love and understanding. Corporeal Writing, as we have all known it, is ending. We have given it deep thought, deep care, and deep discussion for months now. The decision has been made over time carefully, collectively, and lovingly. Some of the reasons for this change in form are about sustainability, some of the reasons are about life transmogrify, some of the reasons are rooted in impermanence and change as a life process, some of the reasons are likely so big they are part of the night sky or the ocean. And yes, some of the reasons are just, you know, dumb as fuck, like money. Whatever. Death to capitalism, patriarchy, and white supremacy. Our sincerest intention is to slowly transition through summer into fall and gently dissolve by December 2026. We’d like to create this ending WITH you so we can help each other remember there is no such thing as ending. We know how much love has been generated collaboratively together and we want you to know this decision is final. We don’t need any suggestions or help from here; we just want to do this with you rather than without you. So I’m writing to you from within a red orb. When a galaxy stops producing the conditions for new stars, it dies. The word for this kind of death is quenching. The day I learned that, I had to go walk around thinking about it for about three days. Quenching. Damn. Quenching happens when there is a removal or depletion of cold hydrogen gas, the basic fuel for star formation. The galaxies then turn elliptical, and red. They are called Red Orb galaxies. They are also called quiescent galaxies. Quiet galaxies. I learned this from a Radiolab podcast sent to me by the brilliant Charlie J. Stephens. You should go get Charlie’s books right now. G’head. I’ll wait. The podcast (link below) rearranged my DNA, yup. (continued in comments or at corporealwriting.com)

Film Club: Resurrection (2025; dir. Bi Gan) a cinematic dive with Janice Lee and Lidia Yuknavitch Friday May 22nd from 12-2pm Pacific over Zoom (A recording will be made available to all registrants for a limited period afterwards.) While books and reading are the lifeblood of writing, we can learn so much as artists by engaging with other art forms. Standing in front of a painting can unlock the key to a chapter where the writer is feeling stuck, or listening to a song while walking in nature can help her find new ways to tell old stories. At Corporeal Writing, each member of our squad shares a raging case of cinephilia. WE. LOVE. MOVIES. We devour films. We watch new ones as they emerge and we watch older ones again and again, not just because we enjoy them, but because we are going to school on narrative techniques and styles. Translating what we learn from movies—a temporal or time-based art-form—to our own written narratives is its own kind of art. On May 22nd, join Janice Lee & Lidia Yuknavitch as they plunge into the dreamscape of Resurrection (2025; dir. Bi Gan), exploring its structure and consciousness through various generative writing portals. You’ll be responsible for watching the film on your own. It is now streaming on Criterion Channel (requires a subscription), and is also available to rent on demand via Amazon Prime and Apple TV. /current-offerings-sign-up/p/resurrection See Current Offerings through the link in our bio for more details and to register 💫

Resurrection by Bi Gan has easily entered my favorite films of all time. The entire film feels like a series of altered states, and is about the history of film, dream, cinematic memory, and senses, but is also about loneliness, suffering, discovering self through relationality, desire, and the liminal spaces between life and death, and death and life. It’s definitely one of those films you need to experience yourself, plus you know I love a really good long take, and the film features a spectacular and emotionally-wrenching almost-40-minute long take that is immensely captivating, to say the least. Come join @lidiamiles and me in a couple of weeks to discuss the film and do some generative writing portals together! Seriously. We are so excited to nerd out over this film with you all. Fri May 22. @corporealwriting Link in bio.
