My original dress fell through nine days before my first Met red carpet. (That’s a story for another day.)
An angel of a friend reminded me of this look from the
@ashistudio fall couture show and within 48 hours we had the team on WhatsApp sending measurements, convinced a friend flying from Paris to bring the bubble-wrapped runway sample corset in his lap, and a sketch of a custom column skirt, adapting the runway look to better suit all five feet of me.
The bodice alone took 400 hours to make: it was hard plaster, hand-painted in oils with a trompe l’oeil burl wood finish so realistic I kept forgetting it wasn’t wood. The monkeys were hand sculpted from wood and were the detail I was immediately drawn to: a nod to a bronze Lalanne monkey that has become a mascot in our home—everyone says hi to it, touches it for good luck, gravitates toward it. When I saw the monkeys on this piece, it felt personal.
I’ve also always loved Frida Kahlo’s use of monkeys. The fact that she would pass time in her blue house painting her own medical plaster corsets made this feel like an even more serendipitous connection. As a mom with two rainbow babies, the symbolism of monkeys as her unborn children really touches me.
My husband, who collects Old Masters, loved the monkeys too. Monkeys depicted as humans were a recurring motif with his favorite Dutch painters (the Bruegels, the Teniers) so this felt like a strangely perfect bridge between us.
The necklace by
@sarahysabeldyne was the perfect finishing touch: veined jadeite, emeralds, and reverse-set diamonds drawing on a closed bud as a metaphor for protection. The yellow
@jessica_mccormack ring is my own and very sentimental.
For my first Met Gala as a trustee of The Met, I wanted to wear something that honored art, fashion, craft, and obsession. And what we did in a week managed to do that in a much more personal way than I could have ever imagined. đź’š
