Two gigs yesterday with @rodneyjcrowell at the completely magical @mimphx . It was a walk down memory lane for me, to the years I spent in Seattle getting my masters degree in ethnomusicology, studying with I.K. Dairo (one of the talking drums we played is pictured here), in a program where Robert Garfias taught. The museum is worth a road trip for any musician or music fan… and is a beautiful reminder that while governments foment violence, people across the world are gathering with family and friends, making music, dancing, cooking food, and generally not acting like what you see in the media. ☮️
Home from a soulful weekend with friends in Austin celebrating Keith Gattis’ induction into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame… thank you @pennygattis ❤️
Pete Finney was a person I used to explain to non-Nashvillians how extraordinary our community is: “The guy who plays pedal steel in The Dixie Chicks also plays electric guitar in a soul jazz band….” Pete also curated exhibits at the Country Music Hall of Fame and had an extraordinary knowledge of rock and country music history. He gave guest lectures to my students at Vanderbilt. He was The Ornaments’ first featured soloist and played with us for all 20 years of our existence, always wearing the same red sequined tie. Before he met his wife Carol he spent many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at our house. I loved him and wish I had told him more often. 💔
The Ornaments performing Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" begins tomorrow at The East Side Bowl. I'm looking forward to sharing the musical good cheer! Thanks once again to @readysteadykeith for the fantastic poster!
