Director Mitch Ryan on shooting in a burning field: “When a farm in Louisiana burns their dead sugar cane crop, the weather has to be just right: the wind has to be blowing in the right direction (by law) and the conditions of course have to be dry. We were told we only had about 20 minutes start to finish for this entire field to burn, so [DP Ben Carey] and I blocked some things out, went handheld and were ready to be disappointed. The crop ended up burning for hours because of low wind and we hung out there all night filming - it felt once in a lifetime. The fire department was standing by at all times - we even had to paint out their ladder truck in a couple shots.”
