“Whatever you become, become it completely.” — Betty Carter
Betty Carter built a career on freedom, risk, and absolute musical control. Her voice could stretch a melody apart and rebuild it in real time, turning every performance into a conversation between rhythm, harmony, and instinct. She was an artist who treated jazz as something alive and constantly moving. It was equally clear that she was a jazz musician first and a singer second.
Betty Carter never approached a song the same way twice. Tempo, phrasing, silence, and swing were all open for reinvention every night she stepped onstage.

“You can’t put boundaries on music.” — Robert Glasper
At International Jazz Day, Robert Glasper has consistently represented the way jazz continues to evolve — connecting improvisation with hip-hop, soul, gospel, and contemporary Black music. Whether appearing alongside Herbie Hancock, collaborating with artists across genres, or bringing the spirit of Black Radio into global concert settings, Glasper’s presence reflects how wide the language of jazz has become.
He has appeared as part of multiple International Jazz Day celebrations over the years, including our 2013 edition in Istanbul, 2016 White House concert, 2018 in St Petersburg and April 30 in Chicago
Glasper’s performances at International Jazz Day feel rooted in conversation — between generations, traditions, and modern sounds. The piano remains at the center, but the influences stretch far beyond one category, which is part of why his work continues to resonate with generations of audiences.
