@mungojerryofficial
this was the first ever charting song with beatboxing. It went number 1 in UK for seven weeks. It went number 1 in Canada for 2 weeks. And it was number three in the US.
This single eventually sold over 30 million copies worldwide making it one of the “best selling singles of all time”.
To put it in perspective 30 million copies sold is…
1.1 million more copies sold than @mariahcarey ‘s Xmas jam “All I Want for Christmas”
4.2 million more than @journeyofficial ‘s “Don’t Stop Believing”
6.9 million more than “Thriller”
12 million more than “Billy Jean”
Over 20 million more than “Hey Jude”, “Tiny Dancer”, “Hotel California”, and “Piano Man”
However it falls 11 million (digital copies) shy from
@edsheeran “Shape of You” which sold 41.5 million copies…💰

TL;DR ->>> Bruce wrote this after producer @jonplandau told him he “didn’t have a hit” on the “Born in the USA” record. Allegedly Bruce took offense at the sentiment, and literally fought Jon - the boss of course, physically overtook Jon and thus the muse took it from there (poetry in motion according to the bruised Bruce) and “Dancin’ in the Dark” became Bruce’s first platinum single - released May 9, 1984 and became the highest selling 12-inch single of hay year.
“Dancing in the Dark” would be the first of 7 ‘hit’ singles from “Born in the USA”. It was his highest selling single of his entire career from the best selling record of his career.
He probably would have been #1 on billboard but he was stuck behind @prince ‘s “when doves cry” and @duranduran ‘s “the reflex” (this is kind of like movies for 1997 - ‘Good Will Hunting’, ‘The Fifth Element’, and ‘Donnie Brasov’ all came out the same year as ‘Titanic’. What a bummer - like your salad coming out with the main course they never had their moment).
The Boss still won tho. It eventually held #1 for 6 weeks on @billboard .
It was voted the #1 single of Australia in 1984. It peaked at #4 in the UK top 100. Then in 2024 it reached #34 again in the UK. Wild.
Funny enough, this song won Bruce his very first Grammy for Best Male Vocal Performance in the year 1985.
This song only existed because he ‘needed to write a hit’. Ironically it was the first of 7 singles that would chart on the top 10 from his record “Born in the USA”.
Turns out the real hit was a right hook from The Boss.

*for my fellow music history dorks*
I read he always lip sang this one live because the way it was recorded “couldn’t be replicated live”. Harry released his version in 1968.
This song was originally written and released by Fred Neil in 1966.
Harry Nilsson apparently had a terrible experience performing early on in his career that led to perpetual stage fright. It looks like his first record came out around 67’. He passed at the age of 52 from heart failure in Jan of 1994 👑 RIP.
I got hats for sale to fund the release of my first solo record. I recorded, mixed and produced it all myself in my bedroom(s) over the past 3 years.
I also have tee shirts up in there! Comment a ‘🌞’ and I’ll send you the link
