Gelem, Gelem has just been featured by
@SkwiglyAnimation , the UK’s leading animation magazine with international reach. Their coverage brings national and global visibility to the first-ever Romani-language animated film produced in the UK, and to the Roma women whose stories lie at the heart of it.
KaskoSan has been creating cultural work directly in Romani language since 2009, grounded in Romanipe, the collective term for Romani identity, language and culture. This long-term commitment has led to a series of firsts:
• The Deathless Woman – the first Romani-language Holocaust film produced in the UK, directed by
@RozMortimer
• A Flag Large Enough – the first Romani-language theatre production in the UK, directed by
@JavaadAlipoor
• Gelem, Gelem – the first Romani-language animated film produced in the UK, created in partnership with
@SalfordUni and directed by
@AdelinaCourt
We are the only Roma charity in the UK that delivers all its support work, activities, events, performances and research directly in Romani language and its variants. This approach reveals insights that cannot be reached in English or other mainstream languages. It brings forward the beauty and power of Romani culture, the unspoken stories carried across generations, and the resilience that has sustained the language despite centuries of anti-Gypsyism.
Our initial set of premiere tickets released at the end of November sold out quickly. We have opened a few additional places and four tickets remain. If you would like to join us for the first public screening of this landmark production, you can secure your place here:
