New Plays about Theatre and Democracy for Young People
We’re inviting schools and youth groups (15-18) to be part of an exciting new theatre project from The Javaad Alipoor Company.
Over 6 months, students will collaborate with internationally award-winning playwrights and professional theatre-makers to explore ideas around power, freedom and truth. They will develop scripts for new short plays, rehearse, and perform live at a major Manchester theatre in early 2027.

Last year marked 30 years since the discovery of Göbekli Tepe, a stone-temple built 14,000 years ago which upended the way we think about human history.
Göbekli Tepe is central to our show ‘Rich Kids: A History of Shopping Malls in Tehran’ – it’s about a different way of looking at history, about what we choose to reveal, and what we choose to cover up.
Rich Kids won the Fringe First Award in 2019 and the digital version of the show was part of the official selection at Sundance Film Festival and Under The Radar, and continued to be streamed all around the world, from Australia to the US to Canada.

We’re going back to 2020, when Javaad and some young British Muslim men exchanged stories of their experiences as a Muslim in the UK.
One of the stories highlight in the project was King Offa’s coin – an English coin, minted by an English King almost 1,400 years ago with his face on one side, and the Shahada on the back: the Islamic declaration of faith.
In response to this, the participants question how, if this was commonly known, it could affect the view on Islam held by people in the UK and the “Not my England” attitudes of the time.
As anti-immigrant feeling continues to rise in the UK, the resulting digital work, ‘What is a Muslim?’ feels more relevant than ever.

“If I don’t know the answer to something, that’s the kind of thing that I might try and make theatre about”
Back in autumn 2023, when we were touring Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World to @UMSpresents , Ann Arbour, Javaad was a guest speaker at the prestigious Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series (@pennystampsseries ) – which has previously featured icons like P*ssy Riot, Simon McBurney and Marina Abramović.

It’s been a month since Elmet premiered in Bradford, and we’re still thinking about this insightful moment from the post-show talk with Javaad and author @FionaMozley , hosted by @BradfordLitFest ’s Syima Aslam. ✨
🍃In the novel, Daddy is a larger-than-life character. A ‘Blake-ian’, towering, bare-knuckle boxer. So large, that in our stage version, no single actor plays him. Fiona talks about this decision in the clip.
On Episode 2 of @britishcouncil ’s Our World, Connected, Javaad talks about the importance of making work that asks complex, often uncomfortable questions 🌐
In conversation with Brazil’s Ambassador to the UK, Antonio Patriota, they discuss the UK-Australia season and how culture can be a powerful tool for connection, diplomacy, and intercultural dialogue.

That’s a wrap on Elmet in Bradford, with rave reviews💥:
★★★★ “A quasi-mythical tale of an off-grid family’s doomed fight against class and capitalism” – The Guardian
★★★★ “Raw, visceral and arresting”- The Yorkshire Post
“Poetic yet brutal, it unearths the myths woven into the land and the violence against women hidden in their shadows” – The State of the Arts
Huge thanks to everyone who joined us at the copse🪵
