I'd like to acknowledge that I, like many other South Asians, am the child of immigrants that had opportunities here because of the Immigration Act of 1965. This wouldn't have been possible without the civil rights movement that began in the 1940s. I am grateful to the African American people that bore the burden of it. 🖤

The self-confessed “workaholic” who most recently appeared on The Morning Show and The Way Back, is also learning to pause during this time. “Anyone who blindly advises everyone to ‘stay busy!’ or ‘get creative!’ is ignoring those with anxiety, depression, or a sensitivity to the collective grief we’re all sharing.” “Hollywood is changing, and is more open to us, but we have a long way to go,” says Janina Gavankar, on South Asian representation on screen. Most recently, you’ve seen her on The Morning Show, with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon; alongside Ben Affleck in The Way Back; and in the Netflix ensemble comedy Space Force. “Things will change faster when more of us are behind the scenes.” Janina Gavankar is many things—an actor, pianist, vocalist, orchestra percussionist, among others. During this global lockdown, she’s learned she’s also a workaholic. “I’ve realized that my self-worth is attached to my workaholic nature, and I need to reframe my identity on something healthier,” she says.
