Community theater? In Los Angeles? Yes, specifically a non-profit organization called @thepublicassembly . They do three original one-act plays on the last Thursday of every month that have been written in the three weeks prior. @tomexploresla stopped by their dress rehearsal on Tuesday to chat with two of their co-directors to understand what it’s like creating an intimate art form like community theater in a huge city like Los Angeles.
NOTE ON 6/27 PERFORMANCE: While the performance for tonight is technically sold out, Public Assembly says that day-of rush tickets will be available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis until they reach capacity.
THANK YOU to all who joined us for PA47 “march madness” last night 💛 full credits below, and thanks to the south pasadena masonic lodge for having us.
We are now accepting submissions for PUBLIC ASSEMBLY 48: “pick a lane” If you would like to submit a piece for PA48, fill out the writing submission form on our website with a brief (400 words or less) description of your idea, noting # of characters, overarching plot, and themes (complete scripts and file attachments not accepted). Submit by 11:59PM on SUNDAY (3/29). [some guidance below*]
All performance styles/forms are welcome. Our only prerequisite is that you’ve attended one of our shows before.
We will make decisions by THURS (4/2).
Note: keep in mind that your final piece must run under 12min and throughout the month it will undergo a rigorous workshop process wherein scripts will evolve considerably.
We’re so excited to read what y’all come up with.

*some guidance as you write your submission:
👉 why must this piece be on stage and not on screen? make the most of the format
👉 we love big swings and weird ideas. clowning, movement, non-verbal… let your imagination run wild
👉 while we often program comedic pieces, we are not interested in sketch (pieces that prioritize quick laughs rather than deeper thematic exploration)
👉 we are often short on dramatic submissions
👉 these are true one acts; please do not include scene breaks
