Tlingit Shaman’s chest, depicting transformation of Raven and Hawk and human. Spiritual connection between all.
Shaman (ixt’) would store all their paraphernalia in chests, rattles, charms, masks. During colonization, they would raid shaman grave sites and take everything. These objects are housed in museums all over the world.
As a Tlingit artist, I’ve spent years studying shaman objects and formline design. They had a level of comprehension between this world and the next spiritual realm, it is depicted in the “art.” The meaning behind it is what I want to learn, carrying this side of the Tlingit culture and history forward is important for me. I’ve dedicated my life to this, I want to see all sides of it. Always reaching, forever learning.
