We are delighted to announce the release of "Endless Limits: The Work of James Howell, 1962–2014," the first career-spanning catalogue dedicated to James Howell’s remarkable practice.
Published in 2025 by @parrishartmuseum and Hatje Cantz, this 144-page volume brings Howell’s lifelong pursuit of light, color, and perception into focus, from his early Bainbridge Island paintings to the mathematical gray gradients developed in Greenwich Village and Montauk.
With essays by Kaitlin Halloran, Scout Hutchinson, Jason Rosenfeld, Ph.D., and an evocative reflection by Hiroshi Sugimoto on Howell’s influence and admiration for his Seascapes series, the publication offers an intimate and scholarly look at Howell’s evolution.
Designed by Eileen Boxer (BoxerDesign) and printed by Trifolio srl, the catalog includes a complete plate section and detailed chronology of Howell’s life and work.
Endless Limits is now available for purchase in the Parrish Art Museum store. We are thrilled to share this milestone with our community.

We are delighted to welcome Laura Bardier as a speaker at The Hope Forum 2026, whose work operates at the intersection of institutional strategy, curatorial thought, and cultural infrastructure.
Laura Bardier is a New York–based curator from Montevideo, currently serving as Executive Director of @jameshowellfoundation and Founding Director of @esteartefair .
Bardier has defined the Foundation’s intellectual direction, conceiving and implementing a long-term plan to reposition James Howell, an historically under-recognized American artist, within a major international institutional context.
She founded ESTE ARTE in 2014, establishing a distinct model in deliberate contrast to the scale and spectacle of traditional fairs, privileging depth over volume and sustained engagement over transactional immediacy. Conceived in Uruguay, ESTE ARTE, centers on solo presentations of newly conceived artworks, positioning artists at the core of the experience and fostering direct, meaningful dialogue between artists, curators, collectors, and institutions.

We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Jason Rosenfeld for his illuminating lecture at the James Howell Foundation on his essay for Endless Limits: The Work of James Howell, 1962–2014.
Rosenfeld’s reflections offered a compelling lens through which to consider Howell’s practice, situating his work within a lineage of Romantic landscape painting while also foregrounding the artist’s deeply individual pursuit of light, time, and perception. His discussion of the “aerial view,” and Howell’s translation of lived experience into the measured tonal bands of Series 10, opened up new ways of understanding the rigor and sensitivity at the core of Howell’s work.
We are grateful for this thoughtful engagement with Howell’s legacy and for an evening that brought together scholarship, dialogue, and community. The full lecture is available on our website, jameshowellfoundation.org.

American painter James Howell found the subject of his art in the color gray. He explored the color’s sensual variety diligently over decades. In 2022, the Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop dedicated an exhibition to Howell presenting his work in the context of Albers‘ paintings. This catalogue documents this remarkable artistic encounter and explores Howell’s work in all its conceptual depth, transcending the seemlingly monothematic of the color gray. His paintings are meditations on the relationship between color and light, based on a refinement of painterly means that, despite their extreme reduction, allow for a paradoxical emphasis on expression.
We also still have “Endless Limits: The Work of James Howell, 1962-2014” in stock to have a deeper dive into the exceptional artists work.
