I’m still working away on MobyDick by Herman Melville, I struggle picking it up now, even though it started so enticingly, but every time I do I’m spanked with a hysterically relevant passage: Chapter 89, titled “Fast-Fish and Loose-Fish”, presents a legal and philosophical meditation on ownership and possession. The chapter describes how in whaling law, a “Fast-Fish” (one attached to a boat by a harpoon or rope) belongs to the whaler who caught it, while a “Loose-Fish” (one not secured) is fair game for anyone to take. Ishmael expands this into a broader metaphor for imperialism, conquest, and the arbitrary logic of power. The final moments of the chapter breaks out into a sort of chant (give it a read its rousing stuff). Expansionist rhetoric is everywhere, and Melville reminds us that power has always rationalized itself through simple but self-serving rules—whether in whaling or geopolitics.

My first project at @royalcollegeofart // @rcavisualcomm Pursuit of Perfection, was a video game built in @unrealengine inspired by Thomas Bernhard’s miserable book ‘Korrektur’ in which his main character goes mad trying to create the perfect cone. The game is an absurdist look at the clumsy mechanisms behind cognitive capitalism, our global pursuit of growth at any cost and its effects on the more than human world. ‘A system in which the entire planet becomes nothing but resources which only accelerates the destruction of the conditions of possibility of human life or possible any life’ - Mackenzie Wark Music by @niall_rogers_ (Talaka - Paraflow) Technical flexes @rian.stephens Tutor @jamie_jenkinson_ Bernhard Love @hollingsville
