What a lovely man. @stephenathome . I remember covering President Obama and First Lady Michelle at the 50th anniversary of the March on Selma across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The president had given his remarks, walked across the bridge and gave a few interviews before we loaded up the motorcade for departure to the airport. Strands of people were gathering along the route and there he was. Stephen Colbert by himself with a full on grey beard - still recognizable to me. He had this big smile on his face as the motorcade went by. I thought to myself “He came here on his own?” No fanfare, spectacle or people “handling” him. It looked like he just wanted to be there for this moment in history. I have covered him a few more times since and he’s always been this light of humor, grace and keen perspective. I woke up this morning with an email from an old friend and former colleague at The Virginian-Pilot. He sent me a clipping from today’s paper where they used a picture of mine commemorating the 50th anniversary to the end of the Vietnam War. The picture they used was from my AP days, back in 2007, covering the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC. All this to say taking pictures and telling stories continues to be important.

So much so the over flow spilled onto the Ellipse. After Pope Francis did a small parade in the “Pope Mobile” he then got in his official car, a Fiat 500L, and drove away. 3:56 pm. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, on the balcony of the Vice President’s Ceremonial Office at the EEOB. Vice President Kamala Harris hosts the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his delegation for bilateral talks between the two countries. I think I’ve been there for all of their meetings. The first was literally days before the Russian invasion. To today where they are standing overlooking the White House. Diplomacy Matters. When leaders build a relationship it changes their country’s relationship. It’s been great to watch their relationship grow.
