What has unfolded in Minneapolis this past month betrays our most basic values as Americans. We are not a nation that guns down our citizens in the street. We are not a nation that allows our citizens to be brutalized for exercising their constitutional rights. We are not a nation that tramples the 4th Amendment and tolerates our neighbors being terrorized.
The people of Minnesota have stood strong — helping community members in unimaginable circumstances, speaking out against injustice when they see it, and holding our government accountable to the people. Minnesotans have reminded us all what it is to be American, and they have suffered enough at the hands of this Administration. Violence and terror have no place in the United States of America, especially when it’s our own government targeting American citizens.
No single person can destroy what America stands for and believes in, not even a President, if we — all of America — stand up and speak out. We know who we are. It’s time to show the world. More importantly, it’s time to show ourselves.
Now, justice requires full, fair, and transparent investigations into the deaths of the two Americans who lost their lives in the city they called home. Jill and I are sending strength to the families and communities who love Alex Pretti and Renee Good as we all mourn their senseless deaths.
Let us honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by choosing love and light over division and hate; carry his dream forward and keep marching toward a more perfect union.

Getting to know our great-grandson Willie in his first year has been a blessing and a reminder of the hope we will always have for the future. Our wish for you and for our country is that we continue to seek in one another love, kindness, and compassion.
Three years ago, I was proud to sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law. Deciding whether to marry, and who to marry, is one of the most profound decisions a person can make. Marriage is a simple proposition: who do you love, and will you be loyal to the person you love? It’s not more complicated than that.
Today, we celebrate the courage of all who made that day possible. It’s that kind of progress that gives us hope that, with every generation, we will continue our journey toward a more perfect union.
I’ve always said our nation has a sacred obligation: to prepare those we send into harm’s way, to support their loved ones when they are gone, and to provide for them and their families when they come home.
To honor that call, when I was President one of my proudest accomplishments was signing the PACT Act — the most significant expansion of care and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances.
This Veterans Day, we honor all the brave men and women who answered the call to serve and defend. Our nation is stronger and our democracy more secure because of their service and sacrifice.
Today we celebrate American workers – the heart and soul of our nation. Unions built the middle class. And the middle class built this country. Happy Labor Day, America.
Today is about freedom. It’s about liberty. It’s about who we are. We’re the United States of America, and nothing like it exists in the world. As we celebrate our nation’s independence, we must also remember that democracy is never guaranteed—every generation must fight to maintain it.

Ten years ago, the Supreme Court affirmed a simple proposition: every American should have the right to marry the person they love. As President, I was proud to sign the Respect for Marriage Act to protect that freedom in federal law.
Love is love. Right is right. Justice is justice.
Today, we honor those who answered duty’s call on June 6, 1944, on the beachheads of Normandy. They came to a shoreline that none of them would have ever picked out on a map. They came to a country many of them had never seen for a people they had never met. But they came, they did their job, they fulfilled their mission, and they did their duty. They were a part of something greater than themselves.
