WARNING: PROTECT YOUR SENSOR! Free-lensing: let me explain… By removing the lens from the camera and holding it in front of the sensor/film you allow nuances in focus distortion and light leaks to effect the image. It can create some interesting, dreamy effects… if that’s what you’re after. It can have a similar effect to that of a tilt-shift lens and if you need a macro in a pinch, by moving the lens further away from the sensor (and somehow blocking the gap (I didn’t say it was a precise exercise)) you can get as close as necessary. Things to consider: - protect your sensor. Removing the lens allows not only light but dust and other bits and bobs to get to your sensor. Be sure to only take the lens off for the time needed to get the shot and keep it covered where necessary. - the technique can be fiddly. You may need to set your focus and aperture first before removing the lens, depending on the shot you want. Once the lens comes off you can play around with the manual focus to get the desired effect.
