🥁🥁🥁 Rising star of the UK jazz scene, clarinet player and vocalist @giuliamarro comes together with @_tomward and @jack__jules (and friends!) for a closing party at our local favourite @thescolthead Having studied under jazz heavyweights at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Conservatoire the Hague, Benjamin Herman and Mike Williams, Giulia’s playing is steeped in tradition. Inspired by the swing era and the composers of this time, Giulia’s original music has reflections of Barney Bigard and Jimmy Giuffre.  Tom Ward is a virtuosic piano player making waves on the UK jazz scene. Inspired by piano hero’s, Art Tatum, Fats Waller and Teddy Wilson, Tom’s stride playing is rooted within the piano tradition whilst remaining fresh. He’s back this year after two incredible gigs at our festival last year - one at St Peter’s Church with Adrian Cox Trio and the other with Giacomo Smith’s band at the Scolt Head. Composer, Arranger and multi-instrumentalist from East London, Jack Jules joins the two. Having come through organisations such as Tomorrow’s Warriors and NYJO, his work is shaped by a fascination with the intersection of musical genres, spanning contemporary jazz, early New Orleans music, folk traditions and electronic groove-based music. Currently studying Composition at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Jack is emerging as an exciting voice on the London music scene, known for his sophisticated and unique compositions and arrangements, and wide-ranging musical eclecticism. As a performing jazz musician, he regularly performs at venues and festivals including the Royal Albert Hall, We Out Here Festival, The Jazz Cafe, 91 Living Room and the Barbican Centre. 12th July | 6pm The Scolt Head 🔗 tickets in bio

@londonjazzfest Jazz Voices Gala 2025 completed!! It’s been a real pleasure working with Guy Barker for the last few months on this concert. After a lot of meetings, phone calls and hours on Sibelius I’m really happy to be able to finally share what’s been going on!! I had the privilege to arrange @caleb_kunle ‘s Gimme Dat and conduct it last night at the Royal Festival Hall. He’s an incredible person, artist and performer and loved collaborating with him. I also did quite a bit of copying for this concert, in particular the Cleo Laine tribute, where I got to take home original parts and scores from the 80s and work with them. A massive thanks to Guy for asking me to do this, and also to all the incredible musicians who made everything so easy and enjoyable!! The whole concert is available on BBC radio 3 so go listen if you want!

A little throwback to Jazz At Lincoln Centre week where the newly formed Guildhall Ellingtonian Band got to play an opening set for the JLCO Youth Band at the Barbican. Huge thanks to Adam for asking me to play and arrange for this gig and the rest of the band for swinging like bad motherfuckers. I’ve included some clips from the gig but also other things that happened that week. 1. The Famous Cotton Tail Soli 2. Arguably one of the best Alto melodies ever written (Black And Tan Fantasy) 3. The incredible @alexatarantino on my arrangement of Chinoiserie 4. The end of Ko-Ko featuring a quick Bari Solo 5. The ending of my arrangement of Lotus Blossom 6. A bit of the workshop for my new piece for Chamber (Ragtime) Orchestra 7. Two of my favourite trumpet players 8. The start of the new Trad / Nola residency 9. Marakesh Looking forward to play with the band in the future (hopefully some exciting things are in the works)

Had the immense pleasure to guest conduct my arrangement of ‘O Tannenbaum’ at the Royal Albert Hall with Guy Barker’s Big Band yesterday. This is my Christmas post for this year 😂🎄 Extremely grateful for Guy for giving me this incredible opportunity and to all the musicians in the band that made the rehearsal process and performance so enjoyable. Got a few clips of some different sections of the chart including a mega solo by @tennorist Looking forward to future work with these guys!

It’s been a ridiculous last few months but have had such a great time doing so many projects (even if I didn’t leave my room for 3 weeks in November trying to reach deadline). Done a little dump of what I’ve been doing to prove that I’m not just lazy. 1. A bit from mine and @jodyhumphries arrangement of “Above All” for the Guildhall Studio Ensemble 2. A very empty looking score from said arrangement 3. The last chorus out of a 20s 10 piece dance band arrangement I did of “Singin’ The Blues” for the Guildhall Big Band 4. The score from that 5. Nice shimmery String Harmonicy end to the bill laurance arrangement 6. A section of the last movement from my small ensemble piece with live electronics and quartet (proper new music coded ) 7. The opening of a rag with my new project (more news on this soon if we can get a gig) Got one more big thing left last year but it hasn’t been done and I didn’t want to post everything all at once

An extract of my new arrangement of Wayne Shorter’s “Deluge” which I was extremely lucky to to have played by the Guildhall Big Band for their Wayne Shorter project featuring the incredible Jean Toussaint. After spending years writing and arranging for big band it was incredible to actually hear (and play questionable Bari ) it live. #bigband #wayneshorter #jazz #jazzarranger #arranger #jazzhiphop

A solo from the other weekend with the boys in my band @_big.massive at brick lane jazz festival. Tried to experiment playing behind the beat a bit, as well as using some bop language and some augmented stuff. I’ve realised that I haven’t posted any modern stuff for like 6 months so thought it was probably worth posting something so people don’t think I just play old music 😂 📸 @jemmarubens #jazz #jazzsax #sax #saxplayer #jazzhiphop #hiphop #digableplanets #london #londonjazz @bricklanejazzfestival

Been really lucky that I’ve been able to do so much big band stuff the last few months. Thought I’d make a big band dump just because, it’s all been so fun. 1.Bit of high clarinet on Roll Em Pete then some One O’Clock Jump 2. Alto solo on Piney Brown Blues 3. Some Bass Clarinet on Rufus Reid’s Time For Nostalgia 4. More high clarinet on The Blue Room 5. Bari Ballad Solo on Falling in Love 6. Very fast sax bit on Toby 7. A little look at my new arrangement of Deluge (Wayne Shorter) for an upcoming Guildhall Big Band Concert with Jean Toussaint on the 16 May - will be my arranging debut. 8. Very very loud bit at the end of I Left My Baby featuring the beast that is @sand_eeyy

Had a go a transcribing this sick @sowetokinch solo from the @nubiyantwist tune “Buckle Up” He’s got such a unique feel and huge sound which is really hard to replicate but it’s so so hip. Soon come soon come. Only did the first half of the solo as I physically cant play as fast as he can😭 Need some more alto chops fr though #sax #jazz #transcription #ukjazz #nujazz #neosoul #hiphop #londonjazz #youngmusician #jazzsax #saxophone #practice #gotnochops #needtoworkonfeel #mybadmybad
