The day this was supposed to be filmed was my mother’s funeral. I do remember when we got accepted into New Victory being so excited that she would be able to come down and see me perform finally in an NYC theater and then COVID hit… When they asked us to come in and be a part of this program for 2021, I didn’t even tell her. I wanted to surprise her with this. I remember being most excited because I remember thinking about how proud she would be if she saw this. Every take we started with that day I took a breath and thought of my mother. I kept her Italian horn inside my costume and when we looked into the light, I imagined looking at her in the light. I tried to think of what she feels like to cross over and watch down on all of us. I am so sad that she is not here physically to watch this, it is frustrating to not have that validation and to share in that with her. She didn’t often show me how she was proud but it was so apparent at her wake when so many friends told me that she would share my videos with them. When I rehearsed with Sun and Manon, I was making stupid, ridiculous mistakes. I kept thinking I was fine, but could hardly focus that rehearsal. I just kept thinking how can we go on dancing when this just happened. I was legitimately afraid I would let them down. I do believe she was there with me on shoot day because somehow I had the strength and the focus that I so desperately needed and was hard to find at that time. It is very bittersweet, to feel that my mom has transitioned and probably sees all now, but I cannot physically see her and share this with her.
I am lucky to dance this piece Sad Hope that speaks on so many levels for the hopes that we have and sometimes the sad reality that is…Or the sadness that is and the hope that prevails.
This piece is very special to all of us in Mozaik, and this particular time meant so many things for me. I am so thankful to everyone who rearranged and took care of everything so this shoot could still happen. I appreciate New Victory Theater and the ladies I dance with for allowing me to dedicate this to my mother. We dance for you Mom.

Meet J9, Artistic Director of No Box Movement.
J9 (Janine Micheletti) is a New York–born, Miami-based choreographer and Hip-Hop dance artist. Her work fuses Hip-Hop, House, Popping, and Waacking with visual storytelling.
She has performed with Madonna, 070 Shake, CeCe Peniston, and Phish, and worked with brands like Spotify and Reebok. Her choreography spans artists and platforms including Shenna, Calvin Play, NOIA, and America’s Got Talent, with concert work performed at Jacob’s Pillow, the New Victory Theater, and the San Francisco Hip-Hop Festival.
A graduate of SUNY Purchase School of Art & Design, she was selected for Breaking Glass: Emerging Female Choreographers Program and received a grant from Chashama. She is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Miami while she continues to build and lead No Box Movement.
