“In-Between”
Digital Print on a 84.1 x 59.4 cm Matte Paper in Frame.
Transition is like the middle path we take when moving toward the next phase in life, but we rarely notice it while we’re in it. It’s kind of like the daily commute to work or heading home. You just keep going keep going and keep going, step after step after step after step, moving from station to station to station to station, without really feeling how long or tough the journey is. We get so focused on where we’re headed that we don’t always realize how much those moments In-Between shape us. But once we finally reach the new phase, we tend to forget how important that transition was in getting us there.
The phrase In-Between is applied in so many areas of life. It’s not just a transition in our personal journeys but also in creative work. I feel particularly connected to that term because of how it applies to animation and other aspects of life. In animation, the In-Between frames are essential to creating smooth motion, just like transitions in life are crucial for growth. That’s why I chose it as the main theme for my work. In-Between represents both the fluid moments in art and the essential, often overlooked, phases of life.
Over time, it’s easy to get caught up in the new phase and leave the journey behind. Every In-Between has its struggles, how far we’ve come, how heavy each step felt. Just like riding a train, moving from station to station, the changes happen gradually but they’re significant. That’s why it’s important to document the process, whether through photos, writing, or drawings, so we remember how tough it was to get here. In-Between is something we need to reflect on, not just forget, because it’s a big part of who we’ve become. Do you still remember your last In-Between?
