Hot Mulligan Emo was never just a phase. Even though I only listen to it occassionally now. When the music started playing, I picked up all the memories of high school days like it was yesterday. Hot Mulligan is from more recent emo wave debuting in 2018. I instantly like it when I first listened to them. Their lyrics hit hard and deeply emotional. The twin screaming vocal of Tades and Chris also perfect. Their music is complex and bright which sounds closer to math rock riffs. It was the best crowd I’ve ever been. The pit was always moving. People are jumping, singing, full of smiles. It feels like home. We were lucky to see them that close just after they played in Coachella. Credit to Andy who I met the previous night and invited me to go. By a chance, I also met Tades at the smoking corner. Albeit, I didn’t recognize him at first glance because all footages I saw of him singing, his face is covered with hair. He’s a cool guy and the best trashtalker #hotmulligan

A evening with Eddie Vedder. He sat alone on the stage, surrounded by beautiful stage setup, singing with a guitar in his hand. He filled the big theater with his golden voice. Finally I experienced it in person. The setlist consists of his solo songs and Pearl Jam songs and some covers. I like all songs from Into The Wild soundtrack. The bright mandolin sounds coupled with his beautiful heavy voice on track like Rise is a perfect combination. My mind slipped away revisiting the beautiful Alaskan wilderness scenery from the movie. Eddie’s voice is one of a kind. Even for the songs he covered, it sounded like the song was owned by him. In some part, his deep voice gave more powerful meaning to the lyrics he covered. All the people I met during the show and the popup the day before are wholesome. I met a lot of middle-aged Pearl Jam fans who show their passions, collections, and told me stories of their memories with Pearl Jam. As a person who spent my youth on late 2000s, I envy of these people who grew up in 90s culture. Some back story, last year I went to Jack White’s show, where Eddie surprised the crowd as a guest vocal, singing Neil Young song together. Both of them are in my rockstars Mt. Rushmore. The next day after that show, I went a to ball game between Dodgers and Cubs in Tokyo Dome, where Eddie also attended it. I saw and adored him from very far away. That night, I saw Eddie’s show from the first row. Between the songs, he handed me his guitar pick and I shook his hand. He noticed the Jack White’s tee that I wore, and started the story to the crowd about his visit to Japan last year. He even asked me how was that show. I was starstruck, answered with my trembling voice. I feel lucky to see him one year ago. Then, I feel I'm the luckiest person that night to have talked with the man Eddie Vedder. some pictures by @andhika.substore #eddievedder

Otoboke Beaver おとぼけビ〜バ〜 This is appreciation post to the band I saw the most in 2025. And yesterday, I watch their solo tour for the first time. It is their last tour with their super drummer, Kahokiss who decided to leave the band. Last year I watched them 7 times. They were the opener for 5 shows that I watched: Idles, Jack White, Green Day, Foo Fighters, and Oasis. I also watched their performances at Fuji Rock Festival and BiKN festival. My first encounter was at Idles concert, January 2025. I didn’t know about Otoboke Beaver at all at that time. They entered the stage, played very loud, very fast, with very sharp lyrics. Ten minutes to their show, I still couldn’t digest what I listened and saw. The fairy in my mind said “Don’t think. Feel.” Then suddenly the music tastes like a double shot espresso. My body couldn’t resist the energy that they projected. It was fire and I’m addicted. The band that assigned Otoboke Beaver as their opener are genius, or borderline using cheat code. They can turn a stone cold crowd into a pure chaos in 30 minutes of their set. Thus, the main band can start their show with a smoking hot audiences. I'd say without Otoboke Beaver as the opener, I wouldn’t enjoy Oasis or Green Day show as much as I did last year. I will miss Kahokiss stage presence. The new drummer, Leo-san is also awesome. I wish they will have a success European tour sharing stage with Iggy Pop and Foo Fighters. I hope to see them many times this year too. #otobokebeaver

Hitsujibungaku. I’ve seen them regularly since 2022. I skipped their performance at Fuji Rock last year because I already bought the ticket for their Budokan Show. In the end, I cancelled that ticket because of my work schedule that day. Last Tuesday, they were the opening act for Wet Leg. Hitsujibungaku played for 40 minutes. It’s my first time to hear Doll, and Honestly live. It’s kinda rare songs on their recent setlist. I seldom fight to be at the front row. But, when I got it, it was for musicians that I loved to the core. For a simple three-piece bands, their sounds on the stage are very rich. Moeka’s fuzzy guitar, Yurika bass that also fill the role of rhythm guitar, and the support drummer Yuna is always on point with the dynamic. Personally, I associated their darkish shade of music with Fall/Winter season. It always on my playlist during these times of the year. Beautiful lyrics that give you reason to survive the blues. Other positive thing, I luckily got a hand to one of their LP that no longer available online. ※海外アーティストOAのため、会場内に羊文学のときもスマホ撮影禁止されてなかった。 #hitsujibungaku

Geese. I was kinda late to the party. They announced the show last August. I tried to listed but wasn’t interested. They released Getting Killed on September, I don’t like it at first listen. But I kept seeing them everywhere. I tried to listen several times again, now I am addicted. Now, their live performance is a different monster. Especially the drum sounds are much powerful in a small sweaty livehouse, where you stand five meters from the drum set, and Max’s playing like he was possessed. Compared to the recording, which I felt it was mixed way behind and softer. It can’t be denied that Cameron Winter’s voice is what define Geese music. And his lyrics are also amazing. A softer and heavier version of Julian Casablanca. Both vocalists are my favorites. All the personnels are very skillful on their own way. Emily and Dominic also did a lot of extended jam outro that made the crowd went crazy. I couldn’t believe how mature they are for such a relatively new band. The dynamic of their songs from slow swirly to rough garage rock sounds are playing with our senses. The album artwork, the western sounds, even the member looks, somehow reminds me of the movie No Country for Old Men. It looks like a slow slice of life where you can feel the wind blowing. But, there is always a tension in the shows that might explode any time. It’s not a fast paced action, rather a slow build up to several bloody disasters. And you can sip a tea in between. #geese

Wet Leg, Finally I saw them. I’ve been prepared for this show for looooong time. Since the release of Moisturizer, I instantly liked it. My favorite album of 2025 by a mile. Perfect music formula, low distorted sub bass, fuzzy guitar, and Rhian unique vocal. Then I digged back to their first album which also full of bangers. Just when the show scheduled to start, they entered the stage full of smoke. Suddenly the screeching guitar riffs of Catch These Fists struck us like a thunder. When the smoke was gone, Rhian stood right in front of me and I couldn’t remember how loud I screamed. Later when I checked my video, it is almost embarrassing. I was so lucky to secure ticket early and entered the stage at the barricade. It was high voltage from start to finish. I was constantly singing, shouting, screaming, without catching a break. Their songs have many parts to sing along. I liked Wet Dream (the clap at the verse), Angelica, Mangetout (the punch in the air at the intro), Liquidize, Chaise Longue (excuse me, WHAT), CPR (what’s your emergency), or simply said: every single song in the setlist are interactive. Wet Leg used to be two-piece band, where they play side-by-side. Now Rhian took over as frontman, and the more introvert Hester stood facing backward as band master. It’s unique but encouraging that you can still be famous musician and overcome your anxiety on the stage. Nevertheless, Hester looks enjoyed the show, dancing and laughing with everybody. Rhian as frontman is super cool. She looks stunning and powerful. I need them to return ASAP. #wetleg

Royel Otis. Their first headliner show in Japan. Less than one year since their first ever show at Fuji Rock. It was one of my personal favorite performers at last year. Their songs are refreshing. Simple indie pop sounds without making things too complicated. Even the performance was flawless, they also looked relaxed on the stage. The show feels like a casual gigs at your friend backyard. Where people just having fun, sing along, and do whatever they wanted. The VFX tailored to each song and also looks stunning. Otis high voice is the best with this kind of music. Even for songs their covered. HIs voice shines on their cover of The Cranberries and Sophie Ellis-Bextor songs. And he has a solid persona on stage as a frontman. All of the two albums they have released are bangers. There is no bad songs and you can repeat it to infinity without getting bored. The order of the songs appeared on the setlist is also well-planned. The introduction, deep cut songs, some acoustic set, and a good climax until the end. And they left their best song as an encore. We left the venue with big smiles. #royelotis

Whirr & Nothing. It’s a lucky night to saw both of these bands at the same show. And just 2 days I watched My Bloody Valentine. What a perfect week. Whirr is a mythological band that rarely active. Catching them doing live in small venue in Japan was a gem. Like another shoegaze band, everything was dark, quite literally. Almost no spotlight on the stage. Heavy noises with whispering vocals set the tones of the performances. They sounded very good. Although, they barely talked with the crowd and chose to keep themselves mysterious. I don’t even saw their faces until the end of the show. They are the band that inspired Wisp, and her breakthrough today. Nothing is quite different than traditional shoegazer band. It has a bit spice of post-hardcore, with more melodic parts in the songs. But they still have the full-noise guitar sounds with reverbs and distortion. Nicky the funny guy, hasn’t drink water for 30 hours and talked like crazy. It cracked me up. Shoutout to Ice Grills who invited Whirr and Nothing to Japan. This was the first show organized by them that I attended. They are one of the best indie promoter in japan. With good selection of Emo/Hardcore/Pop Punk bands. Reasonable ticket and merch prices. And Well organized show from start to finish. The opening act, envy, is also dope. #whirr #bandofnothing

My Bloody Valentine. One of the pioneer of shoegaze music scene. The show was loud and at some points might cause heading damage. Even though the visual animation on the screen was colorful and swirly, the band members were never under bright spotlight. It was gloomy, dark, the air was thick, and I could feel the music on my skin. It’s something that I never experienced before. I enjoyed the show. But I still couldn’t grasp completely the emotion behind it. I guess it’s rooted deeply in the early 90s generation with the social/political background and the music scene at that time. If I was growing up at that period, I could see myself will escape the world by listening to this kind of music. Somehow, I can understand why their songs influenced many newer generation artists. Shoegaze is still a mystery to me, and I’m still curious about it. This year, I already regret that I missed two shoegaze/dream pop band Wisp and Winter. It's like a puzzle that I want to dig it more and more to understand it. #mybloodyvalentine

Viagra Boys. We’re so lucky Tokyo is the only city in Asia they visited. I really can’t describe what happened that night. It wast pure rock energy. Their recording is full of rage with heavy bass-driven songs. But they live performance much more than that. It was super fun and violent. Post-punk band who looks like underworld drug lord in Stockholm. With lyrics that made fun of toxic masculinity. They are very interactive with the crowd and actually very nice. Sebastien dark humor cracked me up. It’s a must see band when they’re around whether in a festival or solo show. On the side notes, It’s interesting how some band build their setlist. Where they put their well-known/breakthrough songs during the shoe. I remember Fontaines DC put Starbuster as the last song of their set. In contrary, Viagra Boys put Man Made of Meat as their opener song. Both shows are enjoyable on their own way.
