I spent the first months of the year in Thailand training alongside the boys of Rawai Muay Thai. Muay Thai has a reputation for being one of the most brutal combat sports, but there is so much camaraderie and kindness and joy there, too.
Part of the magic of Rawai is that it’s an inter-generational gym and a tapestry of both blood and chosen families. The kids there train day in and day out, going through every high and low together. They make balancing strength and tenderness look easy. It’s a version of boyhood that we’re maybe just starting to celebrate.
