Lucas Williams is the founder of @DeadLast.run and a dad to two young boys. He’s in that season where the lines aren’t clean. You’re answering emails one minute and getting tackled on the floor the next. The trap is thinking you need perfect balance. The reality is you just need focus. His rule is simple: be where your feet are. When it’s work, lock in. When it’s family, be all the way there. Early morning runs. Breakfast with the family. Work blocks. Dinner at 5. Books and prayer before bed. Nothing fancy. Just intentional. Because the days are long, but the years are short. And if you’re not careful, you can miss it while trying to build something for them. We started Dad Day to write the kind of stuff we’re going through. Not advice. Not preaching. Just real moments from being in it. 250+ newsletters later, that’s still the goal. This one came from a conversation that stuck longer than expected. Nothing groundbreaking. Just honest. Figured it was worth putting some visuals behind it.

Over the weekend we had the privilege of serving up some hot Joe for the Built for More retreat by @itsdadday before a fun surf with @islasurfschool . As a new dad myself, it was a blast to hear how these guys are doing whatever they can to keep their dreams alive while pursuing fatherhood. Thanks to local favorites @dawnpatrolcoffeehouse and @chicofeos for the good grub, to @ethos_ac and @benjamintowill @peternelsonii for the motivation and @holy_city_crossfit for kicking our ass. To @tuckawaycoffee , thank you for roasting us the tasty beans! Special thanks to @adamkunes for bringing this crew together from all over the country. 🤘 📸 Props to Ethan at @firstlightvideo for snagging all of these shots.

We dropped this in the newsletter this week. “Right now, we’re their whole world. Not in a permanent way. Not in a ‘this lasts forever’ way. But in this window, this season, we’re it. Doesn’t feel big when you’re in it every day. But moments like that remind you. This role is pretty special. And it doesn’t stay that way forever.

Some days it feels like they’re always at each other’s throats. And then out of nowhere…they’re laughing, helping each other up, back on the same team. Reminds you what’s really being built

Giveaway time. If you’ve been logging miles in the Dad Day Run Club on @strava , we’re picking dads at random each week for some solid gear. All you have to do is join the group, search “Dad Day Run Club,” and log at least one run per week. This week’s winner is Ryan L. from Wisconsin, who just knocked out his first half marathon. Nice work, Ryan. Shoot us a DM and we’ll get your 12-pack of @cadence headed your way.

Five months in. More tired than ever. More grateful than ever. The early days are chaos. The small moments are everything.
