🎹👑📸 Incredible times at @lohibar with the wildly entertaining @thegyptianlover ! He spun records backwards, he spun records forwards, he cut, he scratched, he danced, he rapped, he sang, he of course busted out the 808 + Vocoder, charmed the ever living sh*t outta the entire crowd (especially the fly ladies), sold tons of merch and even did a George Michael tribute! A unique hybrid set of highly skilled showmanship, true turntablism, daring dancefloor demolition & effortless electro ecstasy - assembled in a way that only a certified Triple OG could execute 🙌 Thanks to @builtbymeanred for having us and much love to everyone who came out, y’all are also legends! We definitely had an enthusiastic & energetic audience but that being said a lot of people monumentally screwed up by missing this phenomenal display. Sometimes it’s less about the size of the crowd and more about WHO is in the crowd. To quote the great Tony Wilson of Factory Records / Steve Coogan in 24 Hour Party People: “The smaller the attendance the bigger the history. Here’s a brief history recap on our most esteemed guest: The Egyptian Lover (born Gregory James Broussard) is a pioneering American DJ, producer & vocalist. He rose to prominence in Los Angeles in the early 80s as a member of the early Hip Hop collective Uncle Jamm’s Army - sometimes DJing for crowds of 10,000 people at venues such as the LA Sports Arena. Alongside the likes of LA Dream Team, World Class Wreckin’ Cru, Ice-T, Arabian Prince & The Unknown DJ, he was instrumental in putting West Coast rap & electro on the map.   Known for his inventive use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine & a playful, infectious style influenced by the electronic sounds of Kraftwerk, the funk of Zapp, the sexually provocative content of Prince & the cutting edge, musical innovations of Arthur Baker & The Soul Sonic Force, he exploded into the public consciousness with the ground breaking B-Boy party anthem “Egypt, Egypt” which became an instant classic. This 4 million copy selling single was followed by his debut full length “On The Nile”, released on his own imprint Egyptian Empire Records & then by subsequent albums “One Track Mind” (which featured the hit Freak-A-Holic”), “Filthy” & more recently “1987”. In addition to his own music, he produced numerous other artists including Jamie Jupitor, Rodney O & Joe Cooley & more. He also pioneered a unique DJing technique which involves manually spinning a record backwards (while maintaining a consistent BPM) & then perfectly mixing in a second forward playing record on top of it - damn near impossible!   Consistent & prolific throughout the years, Egypt shows no sign of slowing down.
