How does Rotterdam sound if you don’t describe it, but let it play?
A city in motion, where construction cranes, trams, bicycles, and ships merge with a constantly evolving skyline. It is a place where the scent of fresh concrete mingles with spices from the market, and where unexpected combinations form continuously.
In Jazz Impressions of Rotterdam, filmmaker Joysi Olijhoek (
@isyoj ) weaves together the archival treasures of
@beeldgeluid and sounds from Studio RE:VIVE (
@revive_this ) in her signature rhythmic, playful, and visual style.
The short film, which will premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam (
@iffr ), features a live score performed by an ensemble of five jazz musicians of
@codartsrotterdam .
This score, a selection of jazz tracks — including pieces from Brubeck’s Jazz Impressions, which inspired the concept — interacts live with the montage and sound design.
It creates a rich, sensory experience where film, sound, and live jazz breathe together, capturing the essence of a city in motion. The film skips through time, from the 1940s to the modern day, to capture the improvisational heart of Rotterdam. Rather than following a traditional narrative, this project invites you to feel an impression of the city.
