A landmark day for Interreg 🇪🇺 The Interreg Leaders Forum under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 brought together the people shaping what comes next for #Interreg, and there was plenty to talk about. 🌍🩺 European Public Health Week starts today. From 4 to 8 May, Europe comes together to promote health, share knowledge and inspire action around public health. For Interreg, health also means cooperation across borders, improving access to care, strengthening services and bringing healthcare closer to people. 👷‍♀️👷 Labour Day is a reminder that decent work, skills and inclusion should be within everyone’s reach. Across Europe, Interreg projects are helping regions build fairer labour markets, supporting women’s employment, strengthening digital skills, empowering young people and creating opportunities for older workers 🌍🤝 Here are a few initiatives making a real difference: 🔹 WIN (Women in Networks) – Improving women’s position in labour markets in peripheral industrial regions through skills, entrepreneurship and policy support. 🗺️What does cross-border cooperation look like on the ground? It looks like local markets, renovated UNESCO wine cellars, and active ageing centres bringing communities together! Experts from the European Commission, Interreg programmes and regional government representatives, among others, travelled the Slovak-Hungarian border to see it for themselves. The two-day study visit departed from Košice and showcased four real projects transforming one of Europe’s most challenging rural areas, a region struggling with outmigration, limited job opportunities, and restricted access to services. The findings? New local marketplaces on both sides of the border, a sauerkraut processing facility creating jobs in Hidasnémeti, UNESCO-listed historic wine cellars renovated in Hercegkút and Malý Horeš, and active ageing centres in Košice and Miskolc running over 200 weekly activities for more than 1,000 seniors. Cross-border cooperation is building more liveable and resilient regions, for real people, in real communities. 🌍🤝 Jobs and inclusion don’t stop at borders, and neither should solutions. Today, Interact kicks off a unique on-the-ground roadtrip at the Slovak–Hungarian border, starting from Košice, in collaboration with Interreg Hungary–Slovakia and Via Carpatia EGTC (@ezusviacarpatia ), exploring how cross-border cooperation improves everyday life. This project-based policy lab under A more social Europe moves beyond conference rooms and slide decks. Through site visits and open dialogue, participants are discovering what really works, and how cooperation adds value compared to single-fund approaches. But for many regions — especially border areas — access to quality health services still depends too much on geography.
