In today’s digital world, language barriers still exclude millions. While over 6 billion people are online, only a small fraction of the world’s 7,000+ languages are truly represented.
Through their partnership, @UNESCO and @ICANNorg are contributing to the objectives of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages by advancing digital inclusion and multilingualism online. By promoting Universal Acceptance (UA) and Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs), they are helping ensure Indigenous languages can be used and accessed fully in digital spaces—directly supporting the Global Action Plan’s focus on digital empowerment.
From 25 March to 30 May 2026, #UADay2026 mobilizes stakeholders worldwide to accelerate this progress.
A truly inclusive digital future must be multilingual by design.

A language is more than words. It carries memory, identity and a way of seeing the world. 🌎
In Guatemala, children from six Mayan language communities are receiving What Makes Us Human in the language spoken in their homes.
Through a partnership between the Guatemalan publishing house @editorial_cholsamaj , @UNESCO and the @mayanlanguages Preservation Project, this initiative helps children read, imagine and grow, without leaving their language behind.
Some of these languages are spoken by over a million people. Others survive thanks to only a few hundred voices.
Selected by UNESCO to promote the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, What Makes Us Human has been translated into more than 37 languages worldwide, and now continues its journey in Mayan languages.
Because preserving a language is not only about the past. It is about dignity. Belonging. And a future where every child can learn in the language they call home.

A year ago, at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, something unique took place: the first presentation of a dissertation entirely in Kaqchikel.
Kawoq Baldomero Cuma Chávez, activist, professor, and writer, gave a compelling presentation on the digital preservation of Mayan languages at the "Language Technologies for All" Conference 2025.

NEW Publication: UNESCO launches the Global Roadmap on Multilingualism in the Digital Era!
Most of the world’s 7,000+ languages, including the vast majority of #IndigenousLanguages, remain excluded from the digital world. This new Roadmap offers a powerful tool to change that.
Launched during the Second World Summit for Social Development, the Roadmap lays out a clear path to ensure no language is left behind, guiding governments, tech developers, and communities toward language-inclusive AI, ethical digital transformation, and equitable access to digital spaces.
