I knew this was going to be an amazing city to skate in, but it’s the group of wizard skaters here that make this a special place right now. I felt at home immediately - thank you for such a warm welcome 🫶
This was the last spot of the week from my trip to Denver over Thanksgiving - a rooftop parking garage near City Park. Billy and I had skated this spot on Tuesday of that week, so this session was a good way to check if I was getting acclimated - both to the elevation and to a new session dynamic.
I’m used to skating on my own and hammering away at a particular move or sequence until I’m satisfied with it or too exhausted, with little to no pause for thought. In constrast, this session (and a lot of the week’s skating) was led by experimentation. I spent much of the time digesting all the new ideas I was seeing and the rest of the time trying to see where I could keep up or contribute. I mostly kept to what I know, but I was happy enough with my skating.
But the thing that has really stuck with me is that I finally located what is special about the handful of skaters I admire most: the demonstration of mastery through improvisation. Having no idea where you’re going when you start, but immediately moving in a way that makes it clear you’re going to get where you want to be. Right now, more than anything, I think that’s what I aspire to be able to do when I skate.
