Norm Ornstein, Sitara Mazumdar, and Noah Millhouse from Immutable joined @newshour to talk about the power of urban debate leagues and how debate helps young people find their voices.

Behind every student who uses their voice in debate, there’s someone who helped them believe it mattered in the first place. For Haven, that’s his mom, C'Harday.
Debate doesn’t just build confidence in the classroom—it’s nurtured at home, in conversations at the dinner table, and in encouragement before tournaments. It instills the quiet belief in debaters that their words carry weight.
Coaches, teachers, teammates—they all shape the journey. But it often starts with a parent who believes first.
You might hear it and think it's just noise, or "speed talking," but in competitive policy debate, what you're hearing is a tactic called "Spreading." And it is a deliberate, highly honed skill.
It's not just about who speaks the fastest; it's about strategic efficiency. Debaters "spread" (speed-read) to: Pack maximum evidence into limited time. Overwhelm their opponents with arguments. Maximize their platform and ensure their perspective is heard.
In Immutable, we see young debaters transform rapid-fire delivery into a tool of mental agility and powerful advocacy.
Merging skill, speed, and voice.
Have you ever heard "spreading" used in debate? Could you keep up with the argumentation? Let us know in the comments!
IMMUTABLE is coming to select PBS stations Sunday April 26th. Check your local listings for specific airtimes.

In our documentary, IMMUTABLE, we follow Daniella’s journey. Diagnosed with autism at age two, Daniella found her voice—and her power—through the Washington Urban Debate League (@WUDL ).
Daniella and her partner, Sitara, used their platform to tackle systemic ableism head-on. They advocated for a federal jobs guarantee, shedding light on the staggering employment gaps that many autistic adults face today.
When we support Urban Debate Leagues, we aren’t just funding a competition—we’re empowering the next generation of advocates to challenge the status quo.

Parker is a high schooler who has had to find workarounds for things most of us take for granted — and she's still showing up to compete at the highest level she can.
The barriers her family has had to navigate behind closed doors would never show up on a debate scorecard. But they may have shaped the arguments she makes during her debate tournaments.
