Since 2024, we, AI HOKUSAI, have been exploring how creatives and cultural professionals are working with AI tools — from curiosity and experimentation to questions of authorship. We aim to cut through the noise by examining the Art+AI phenomenon from cultural, technological, anthropological, and philosophical viewpoints. We need a meaningful and representative analysis. We developed and employ a mixed-methods approach, which includes data from our global open calls (with over 400 applicants from 64 countries), observations from our online residency/ laboratory, as well as the virtual environment and the “AI HOKUSAI: Legacy encoded” exhibition, which we opened in May. We analyzed expert interviews and transdisciplinary webinar transcripts. Since August, our efforts have been focused on conducting a global online survey (targeting about 1,700 respondents). We collected insights from an impressive variety of actively practicing professionals working across art, technology, curation, and cultural innovation, who shared their experience and perspective. The first insights contributed to the research publication on the evolving role of AI in artistic practice and legacy conservation that we presented during the recent REACT Conference and CultTech Summit by @culttech.association in Vienna a week ago. Now, the online version of this book is available - https://www.aihokusai.art/report2025. Active link ⬆ Our deepest gratitude to our artists in residence @alexmayarts @oksana.fedchyshyn @hyphae_av @sa1ntdenis @tomo_sone @juliocesarpalacio @sares_at and the experts who supported our work and to the professionals who shared their perspectives in interviews, which became a valuable part of the publication - @andres.burbano.12 David Gunkel, @dbelkevich @markevitch @julienb879 @moben_maurice_benayoun @ninasabinacaballero @paulroseroc @shamarahman @dslcollection @toniasamsonova @gabelle @vincentbarue , @w.e.i.d.i PS This first publication forms the basis for a forthcoming monograph (2026), which will incorporate expanded data analysis and curatorial reflections. @aihokusai.art ArtTech Research Project proudly presents AI HOKUSAI: LEGACY ENCODED. Explore - active link in bio 🔼 This groundbreaking virtual exhibition reimagines the enduring influence of the 19th-century Japanese master Katsushika Hokusai through the lens of contemporary media art and artificial intelligence. Developed over several months by a global team of curators, artists, researchers and technologists, the exhibition marks the culmination of a hybrid research initiative and experimental online residency. The result is a fully immersive digital experience that brings together tradition and innovation across platforms — accessible via computer, tablet, smartphone or VR headset. AI HOKUSAI: LEGACY ENCODED pays tribute to Hokusai's philosophy and artistic vision. The artist once called himself “the old man mad about drawing.” Through this project, his methodology is reimagined in the context of today's evolving relationship between humans and machines. From virtual topographies inspired by Japanese woodblock landscapes to soundscapes and visual narratives created with AI instruments, the exhibition constructs a speculative environment where centuries merge and boundaries dissolve. The 25 km2 virtual space unites artists from 12 countries, offering viewers an immersive journey where tradition meets digital innovation. More than just an exhibition, AI HOKUSAI: LEGACY ENCODED is an experimental ecosystem — a living archive in motion — composed of digitally rendered terrains, AI-mediated storytelling and speculative visual poetics. Visitors navigate this world not merely as viewers but as participants traversing temporal layers that blur the digital, historical and organic. In a world that asks us to grow up, shrink down, and stay quiet… IKONO Berlin dares us to play loud. This immersive art playground isn’t just for selfies (though your camera will love it). It’s a space where adults reclaim wonder, weirdness, and the radical act of joy. Whether you’re floating in a room of lanterns or blending into a monochrome dreamscape, every room is a rebellion against the ordinary. 🎭 Tagline: Camouflage isn’t about disappearing—it’s about disrupting with beauty. To play is to resist. To be seen in joy is a form of protest. IKONO is Berlin’s colorful yes to that. ⸻ #Hashtags #IKONOBerlin #SubversiveBeauty #PlayIsResistance #RadicalJoy #CamouflageRebellion #ImmersiveArt #JoyfulDisruption #KenBrenimanBooks #MindfullyMortal #subversiveactsofhumanity @ikonospace

“Sensus Communis is the term taken from the philosophical idea of linked sense relations in human perception. This meaning relates to our theoretical concept, which deals with the themes of multi-sensory analogies, memory, imagination, and notion of reality, specifically aimed at the medium of virtual reality.” The team consists of @evelyn_bencicova , @enesguc , @ikonospace , @studio.labour and @zeyblade_ We have approached Sensus Communis to feature their experimental multi-sensory installation Anti Atlantis as a part of our spatial experience. Präsentation im Deutschen Bergbau-Museum Bochum von September 2024 bis September 2026. 2024 in Review – Here’s to a New Year!✨🦑🦖🦚 What a year it has been! I had to look through my CV just to remember everything, as so much has happened. As the year comes to a close, I want to thank everyone who has supported my artistic and scientific work. The year began with a milestone: the publication of my doctoral thesis. I’m grateful for the opportunity to present my artistic research at events like the XR Networking Event at @aurora_school_for_artists at HTW Berlin. There were many inspiring exhibitions: in Vienna at @petergaugy Galerie with @l_i._m_o & @marlieswirth , in Berlin at Sexauer showroom @sexauer_gallery @jan_philipp_sexauer , at @somaart.berlin @nabinaraberlin , at @villaheike.berlin special thanks to @berlinglassworks , and at @holitopia_festival with @madeleineschwinge and @frueh_jp . Especially important was participating in @kiaf_official @sgdg_seungahlee in Seoul! Exciting projects made great strides this year, particularly Patterns of Pathology, which features an AR component. We were honoured to present the project at @berlinscienceweek , a moment I’m particularly proud of. I also began working with Prater Digital, the digital focus of @pratergalerie . I look forward to sharing more in 2025. Balancing artistic and scientific work is always challenging, but it's inspiring to see artistic research gaining more recognition, encouraging us to think beyond traditional boundaries. Looking ahead to 2025, I believe we need energy, optimism, and critical thinking. How can we, as artists and scientists, thrive in a society where feminist progress is being made, but patriarchal and capitalist structures continue to exploit? How much exploitation will it take before all systems collapse? These questions are particularly important to me in the context of nature and Queer Ecologies.🌍 I believe overcoming these challenges is possible, but it requires bold and innovative thinking. 🪼🧠The future will be shaped by art and culture – through texts, artworks, music, and all forms of expression. Wishing you all a wonderful start to the new year! ✨ There’s much ahead, and if you’re interested in collaborations or projects, don’t hesitate to reach out.

This year, I had the pleasure of exhibiting alongside many wonderful artists at @kiaf_official in Seoul. As a little reflection, I'd like to share an interview I did with the korean edition of Marie Claire @marieclairekorea , who collaborated with KIAF. A special thanks to curator @sgdg_seungahlee and her team for inviting me. Here’s an excerpt from the interview: "Marie Claire: I’m interested in how you’ve used technologies like Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in this work as tools to express your theme. Marlene Bart: I favour an approach that encompasses both digital and analogue media. Although I’ve worked with two-dimensional techniques like printmaking, book design, and taxidermy, I’ve always been fascinated by discovering three-dimensional elements within these techniques, adding depth and creating an implicit space in the work. In one sequence of Theatrum Radix, I explore the structure of snail shells, ammonites, and antelope horns. Viewers can see the intricate patterns and textures inside the shells, which are not visible to the naked eye, and experience the beauty of the spiral structures. By combining CT-scan and VR technologies, viewers are able to explore nature in a new way. Ultimately, the work reveals that we humans are only a small part of a much larger whole." #KIAF #ArtAndTechnology #VRArt #ARArt #TheatrumRadix #MarleneBart #MarieClaire #DigitalArt #AnalogArt #CTScanArt #NatureArt #ImmersiveExperience #ArtExhibition #SeoulArt #ArtAndScience #ContemporaryArtist #ModernArt
