Homebound 001
Two-hour live plot at @manacontemporary this past Saturday. 34 pens and 20 interpretations of what home means to people; deconstructed, abstracted, juxtaposed. Images fed through drawingbotv3, audio files turned into waveforms, text messages fed through TTS software to ultimately become waveforms.
The set of lines making up the waveforms unique to each person and their answers. Lines are either filtered out based off size, offset, lofted, rotated around a point, spread across a 2D field randomly, turned into circles based off their length, rotated around a central point in 3D to make a noisy mesh, etc.
Probably spent around 150 hours iterating and learning for this piece. Despite the time it took and maybe only 4 strangers walking into the room while I was working (lmao), my family and a bunch of friends were present or rooting me on from afar - and that's what really matters. This opportunity, reading through their thoughtful responses, & sharing this experience with them is the takeaway ✨
This is hopefully just the start of an ongoing series in collaboration with @itsdense . If you'd like to participate, call 551-220-2368 to leave a voicemail or text something specific that feels like home to you.
For future pieces, I'd love to explore different abstract forms of representation or lean into one or two and see what the output can be.

Several tests before generating the base that will be sent to the pen plotter. This code has many possibilities—like memories, there is no fixed number. I’ll share some; help me organize them :) #processing #penplotter #generativeart #metatiles #computercraft
My starting point for creating code almost always begins with a question: how can I translate emotions, ideas, and humanistic concepts into mathematical formulas?
Within a collective reflection with other artists, we were invited to think about time. The first word that came to me was memory — perhaps because it is something I engage with daily while accompanying my mother through her experience with dementia.
For the development of this new series, I knew I wanted to work with memory — affective memory — and the ways in which it can be activated. In this process, I began to look at construction leftovers and old tiles found in my family home — objects carrying emotional, familial, and material memories.
This investigation led me to the term rememory, introduced by Toni Morrison in the novel Beloved (1987). More than memory, rememory describes the idea that the past does not disappear: it remains inscribed in places, objects, and surfaces, capable of being revisited and reactivated.
The question then became: how can this idea be translated into code?
How can a generative system work with layers of time, traces, repetitions, disruptions, displacements, and reappearances?
Here I present the first tests of this code — an attempt to transform memory into a system, and the system into matter.

A new Metatiles chapter starts here!
There’s something special about opening a box and knowing it marks the beginning of a new chapter.
Unboxing the iDraw H A1 Large Format Plotter was simple and intuitive — from opening the box, organizing the components, to assembling the machine step by step.
After a year and a half working in A3 format, this phase allowed me to understand the machine, explore ceramic material, and develop the technical formulas that support my process. Working tile by tile has been essential, but each tile remains a unit within a system. Now, I can begin to work with more complex systems at a larger scale — where building complexity becomes the real challenge.

Machine play.
I see it as the Machine has the rules so I don’t have to.
Giving me enough constraints to bounce around in. Even though my hands aren’t doing the marks, im using and playing with the process to orchestrate the image. Which I have found very refreshing.
I see it as simply switching my role in the creative process.
And the sound of the machine is nice too, especially slowed down
