HAUS CAREERS VOL I: FIFTH SPACE. For our very first HAUS CAREERS event, we welcomed FIFTH SPACE: the team behind Power Station, a 29-acre waterfront development featuring 5.4 million square feet of residential, office, life science, and retail space, all interspersed with 7 acres of parks. The engaging conversation and panel were led by Max Goeggel ’25 — Founder of HAUS and an Associate at FIFTH SPACE, a San Francisco-based real estate development firm.

POWER IN COMMUNITY tells a story about the legacy of workers who shaped the site and in turn, shaped San Francisco. With this site-specific work I wanted to communicate that the new building is a home for today’s workers, but it’s also been shaped by the legacy of workers who came before them.

The sculpture is composed of gears, pulleys, and wheels salvaged directly from the decommissioned Power Station. Accompanied by designed metal signage and archival images of industrial workers who worked here over the last century. Sculpturally, I wanted the worn wheels, gears, and pulleys to be visual anchors for storytelling because each repurposed object evokes the actual hands and tradespeople that shaped the city from the ground up. CREATING ‘FUTURE HEIRLOOMS’ ⛓️ What stuck out to me when first meeting Sophie Maxwell was that the objects and clothing she adorns herself with speaks before she does. She’s an elegant, soft yet extremely smart and powerful woman who chooses her words carefully. It felt like her personal style became like a shield maybe or an amulet. This led me to think about heirlooms and how women pass on memories and lessons from one generation to the next through our adorning objects. To properly create this work, Sophie let us walk through her jewelry box 🤎 FUTURE HEIRLOOMS connects Sophie’s legacy to both her family’s heritage and to future generations who might live in the building. It tells a story in a form of communication unique to her. I wanted to capture this soft strength, this subtle form of communication. Graceful arcs in repeating motifs of 3 honor the 3 generations of community stewardship and leadership Sophie’s family has brought to the neighborhood. With this sculpture, I really wanted to capture the softness or delicacy of the power of women and the grace and legacy of Sophie Maxwell through soft sculpture. s/o to the @elemental.studio.sf team who helped me fabricate & install the sculpture 🫶🏽⛓️
