I was really excited to be called for this, only a week before the shoot. It was a very intense week of problem solving in New York to make this happen with a great team, but it turned out really great.
As usual, Val brought bold ideas for transitions and new techniques - the brand new Loawa probe lens for transitions through circles (smoke rings, bottles, mouths, hands).
He also brought a 360 Go Pro for rotating shots, as well as his 35mm stills camera for the ripped print effect which he had used on the âMarsellus Wallaceâ video.
Initially I was sceptical about how the Loawa and Go Pro would work next to 16mm, but the results were cool.
Val also wanted to do a âbullet timeâ effect on a Bike which we had to solve without budget for a Bolt. We settled on a freeze frame and a stand painted out in post.
I brought handheld operating, my love of slow shutter effects, and the â3Dâ effect of taking stills from multiple different angles using Bolex or 16mm.

Shots of bikes done with Arri 416 and 10-52 Cooke on an electric cart. Party mostly done with the 8mm Ultra and Cooke zoom. Bolex shots done with Super Speeds for 3D effect in second video. Elevator and done with a 5mm Optex. Roof done with 11-165 Canon. Loawa shots with A7S. Stocks: Kodak 7219 500T, 7207 250D
