Night 6 of the Halifax Urban Folk Festival was everything the festival should be. What a fabulous night at The Carleton. I’ve said it before, but this venue really is something special. I still haven’t gone for a meal there - and that’s something I need to rectify soon - but as far as a live music space goes, it’s pretty close to perfect.
The only challenge for me is that it’s tough to stay out of everyone’s way while shooting. There isn’t much room to tuck yourself into, but the staff are always incredibly understanding and patient, which makes such a difference. Watching the crowd filter in feels like watching family gather in a cozy living room for a show - it’s intimate, welcoming, and full of heart.
The songwriter circle that opened the night featured
@_aysanabee_ ,
@hearts.of.kin , and
@joncornwall , and what a trio that was. It was great to see Aysanabee again after photographing him at the 2024 Junos. He’s got a beautiful, powerful voice, and the way he tells stories between songs makes him feel like such a genuine, grounded person.
Hearts of Kin were equally amazing — their harmonies were rich and stunning, and they radiated warmth on stage. I’m really glad I got to see them live and look forward to catching them again.
It was also my first time seeing Jon Cornwall perform - I usually know him as the resident sound man at The Carleton - and he fit perfectly alongside the others. A truly excellent lineup all around.
@rhettmiller was a real treat to see. His talent is undeniable, and it was especially fun to witness his signature “Windmiller” move in person. I tried to capture it, but sadly failed this time! With the three-song rule for shooting, I didn’t get to capture the Halifax All Star Band that played after, but I did spot Leif - my favourite local artists to photograph.
Thank you so much to
@carletonhalifax ,
@huffhalifax , and the amazing
@wendyphillipspr , can’t wait for next years lineup!
