back on instagram 🤘🏼 — i had to force myself to take a short break while ramping down from a super fun+intense tour with the ever-inspiring @thaleastringquartet 🩶
this is an audience video from my giovanni sollima <l.b. files> concert with @musicanovaorchestra and @musicwarrencohen . this is the encore, where i played some luigi boccherini — the namesake of l.b. files — with a dear friend and former studiomate who is now in arizona, @dkimdotori .
perhaps as is the case with all improvised cadenzi, this is far from a perfect performance and i mentally struggled with the idea of posting it. but ultimately the thought of sharing a nice moment where i felt pretty free about combining the concerto i just performed with the inspiration behind it convinced me to just do it anyway. hope you enjoy hearing this invention as much as i enjoyed making it 🙏🏼

improvisation in classical music pt. 2: traditional classical improvisation ✨ this felt appropriate to share after talking a bit about contemporary improvisation in my last post.
a lot of classical improvisation is rooted in ornamentation, the practice of taking an existing melody, interval, or pitch and adding onto it. this can be done for a variety of expressive reasons — i do it usually to emphasize certain harmonic intentions, to create melodic variation, or to simply add sonic interest. one could even argue that all music is an ornate form of a single pitch or interval idea…. anyways, with a bit of experience, ornamentation can become quite intuitive and add an extra layer of intentionality and fun to live performances of this aesthetic of music.
here’s an example of some ornamentation in this boccherini l’imperatrice sonata i played as an encore with @dkimdotori , after performing sollima with @musicanovaorchestra . check out the score to see the difference between what is being played and what is written.
thank you @https.rea.d for this video 🫰🏼

I didn't think it would actually happen, but it did, and I am so grateful to have gone on this trip with these wonderful people and learned so much about all of you, myself, nyc, and life in general 🫶
New York Day 3: The Final Day™! (plus some pictures from day 2)
This trip was absolutely amazing and I had a lot of fun, even though I had to come in a day late with Daytona due to the premiere of my orchestra piece (that should be another post). This group has been amazing with me joining the second semester and throwing a project together as I did my first semester of @dbrlab in Fall 2022. It was beautiful to see all our projects evolving and blooming. This trip was good for me in many ways, and I think we all grew in unexpected ways on thie journey. I love you all, let's stay in touch and create more work together!
Shout out to Alex and Phoebe for learning sheet music for my part 2 days before my trip, Daytona for trying to learn a part, and everyone else who participated in the ending of my piece, it felt magical.
Thank you to @nationalsawdust for having us and sponsoring this work!
(Another shout out to the audience member from Berlin who apparently came to New York to find good music and stumbled across our show and had good questions and feedback, that was really cool and K hope you're doing well!)
