DC dance-punks @light__beams bring to @mannysstatecollege a sound that’s as physical as it is urgent. Formed in 2015 by Justin Moyer (Puff Pieces), inspired by ’80s freestyle and Sheila E., Light Beams combine samplers, timbales, and deep-pocket rhythm into a polyrhythmic mélange sometimes dubbed “zap-tone” or “block rock” — a forward-looking reinvention of late-20th-century dance-pop built with 21st-century tools.
On their latest album Wild Life, Light Beams sharpen that ecstatic energy into something more pointed, channeling Moyer’s recent experiences as a protest reporter and member of a Pulitzer Prize–winning team covering the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Across nine tightly distilled tracks, the band paints a surreal, bittersweet portrait of modern America — danceable, confrontational, and deeply alive.

DC-based @light__beams bring their pulse-heavy, future-facing dance punk to @mannysstatecollege ~ Thursday, January 29th, 2026. The project began in 2015 when Justin Moyer (Puff Pieces)—drawing inspiration from 80s-era freestyle music and Sheila E.—started combining samplers and timbales with Sam Lavine, longtime drummer for DC hip-hop mainstays The Cornel West Theory. With the addition of bassist Arthur Noll, Light Beams forged a polyrhythmic mélange—sometimes dubbed “zap-tone” or “block rock”—that reinvents late-20th-century dance-pop using 21st-century tools.
On their album Wild Life, Light Beams channel that sound into something sharper and more expansive. Written in the wake of front person Justin Moyer’s work as a protest reporter—and as part of a Pulitzer Prize–winning team covering the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol—the record offers a surreal, urgent portrait of contemporary America.
Building on their earlier releases, Wild Life expands the group’s minimalist palette resulting in bigger sounds, bigger themes, and a bigger canvas, all while keeping bodies moving.
