Bögdana Kosmina Emergency Suitcase Opening: May 22, 7 pm with a Super Special Opening Performance “Bits of You” by Sasha Malyuk & Boji Ro at 7:30 pm with Alina Kleytman, Anatoly Belov, Boji, Bogdana and Tamara Kosmina, Davyd Chychkan, Fito, Fedir and Bohdan Tetyanych, Love Curly, Lucien Gurbert, Nikita Kadan, Nikolay Karabinovych, Plisetskiy, Yevgenia Belorusets In February 2022, Bögdana Kosmina evacuated Kyiv with a single suitcase—a living archive accumulated since the 2000s, not a collection but a visual commons of her community’s power. For five years, it traveled from Kyiv to Berlin, Mexico City, Paris, Prague, and Vienna. Kosmina valise embodies abundance—a refusal to abandon what sustains. It functions as a counter-archive: where institutions demand permanence, the suitcase embraces precarity and lived experience’s sensual disorder. Where archives insist on distance, it demands intimacy. The exhibition is part of the Independent Space Index 2026, which takes place from Friday to Sunday, May 29–31. In climbing, a horizontal movement at a certain height; in architecture, an ornamental band, but somewhere up there, above our heads, out of reach, an ornament along the ceiling. Horizon. Horizontal band. It carries something cinematic, something connected to movement: climbing in effort, the in-between situation, the attempt to cross over into another place. We don’t know what awaits us there. One can get the shivers. Paulina Semkowicz is a visual artist working primarily with painting. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and from the Faculdade de Belas Artes at the University of Porto, Portugal. Recent solo presentations include TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin (2026), Spiritvessel in Catalonia (2025), VIN VIN Gallery in Vienna (2025), and EVN Sammlung in Maria Enzersdorf (2025). Nazim Ünal Yilmaz Among Friends Opening: March 13, 7 pm On view: March 14–28, 2026 A cheerful picnic: men together, out in nature, relaxed and carefree. The colors are exuberant, the bodies intertwined. Yet as the gaze lingers, the scene begins to unravel. One is on all fours, another has his hands tied. The same face appears again and again—familiar, iconic, almost suspiciously familiar. Elvis is tickling my feet. The line between laughter and scream blurs. He’s supposedly playing guitar with my feet. This old buddy used to hang out in Black churches listening to gospel; he soaked up the sounds around Beale Street in Memphis. A generous portion of his repertoire consisted of polished reworkings of songs by Black artists. Meanwhile, in 1950s America—while racial segregation was still firmly in place—he conveniently found himself welcomed onto radio and television platforms that were inaccessible to Black performers. The title “Among Friends” is ironic. Is this really a friendly picnic, or just another setting where hierarchy politely lays out its blanket? I held the tickling gesture right on the thin line between joke and domination. A boundary crossed in the name of fun, superiority disguised as intimacy. Even within “friendship,” power—classed, racialized, colonial—knows exactly where to sit. Nazım Ünal Yılmaz (1981, Trabzon) is an artist based in Vienna.
