New Release: Periwinkle by Adebunmi Gbadebo
The making of the print mirrored the depth of its meaning. Pushing materiality further than ever before was not just a challenge but a necessity, and one of the many reasons Highpoint was drawn to working with Gbadebo. To screenprint with soil, Highpoint sourced an industrial spice grinder to mill the red clay finely enough to pass through the mesh of a screen, only to discover a second, unexpected hurdle. Left untreated, the soil began to grow organic material. Baking it became essential, a lesson learned through experimentation rather than instruction. That trial and error process, full of surprises, setbacks, and discoveries, became part of the work’s DNA. The result is a print that feels as intentional as it is elemental, carrying the physical, historical, and emotional weight of the site it comes from. Periwinkle exemplifies a work where land, memory, and material speak together.

Highpoint Editions, along with five print publishers across the country, artist William Villalongo, and urbanist Shraddha Ramani, announced today the release of Printing Black America: Du Bois’s Data Portraits in the 21st Century. Villalongo and Ramani collaborated with these six publishers to reinterpret the historic data portraits created by W. E. B. Du Bois, using both national and locally-sourced contemporary data.
Printing Black America is structured as six themed portfolios, each containing five prints produced in editions of 20. Together, the full project includes all six portfolios, totaling 30 prints. Portfolio Four: Ownership, published by Highpoint Editions, updates and reimagines 5 original Du Bois data portraits and focuses on aspects of Black proprietorship offering insights into the wealth gap between Black Americans and others as well as concerns of ownership local to the Twin Cities.
Alongside Highpoint Editions’ Ownership portfolio, additional printmaking partners and themes include: USF Graphicstudio in Tampa, Florida (Portfolio One: First Impressions); Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn, New York (Portfolio Two: Populations); Island Press in St. Louis, Missouri (Portfolio Three: Employment); Mullowney Printing Company in Portland, Oregon (Portfolio Five: Education); and Paulson Fontaine Press in Berkeley, California (Portfolio Six: Communities).

Inspired by the groundbreaking data visualizations of W.E.B. Du Bois from the 1900 Paris Exposition world's fair, this project reimagines his revolutionary work through contemporary printmaking and current data.
This release represents a historic collaboration between artist William Villalongo, urbanist Shraddha Ramani, and 6 print publishers across the US including USF Graphicstudio, Powerhouse Arts, Island Press, Highpoint Editions, Mullowney Printing Company, and Paulson Fontaine Press.
Printing Black America is now available as six thematic portfolios published in editions of 20. Each portfolio holds 5 prints. Topics covered are First Impressions, Populations, Employment, Ownership, Education, and Communities. The complete project collection includes all 6 thematic portfolios for a total of 30 prints. We’re thrilled to welcome Niall Bingham as Lead Printer of Highpoint Editions!
Joining us from Zaragoza, Spain, Niall brings more than 20 years of experience across lithography, intaglio, relief, and screenprinting. He has worked in leading workshops around the world — including David Krut Projects in South Africa and Atelier le Grand Village in France — collaborating on editions with artists such as William Kentridge, Diane Victor, and Dalila Dalléas, among many others.
Niall’s arrival marks an exciting evolution as we move into a co-leadership model for our publishing studio alongside Lead Printer Zac Adams-Bliss and Lead Printer-in-Residence Judith Baumann.
Join us for a meet and greet on March 24, from 6-7 pm at Highpoint to connect and learn more about Niall. We’re excited for you help welcome him to Highpoint!
