Carter Family Archives
These memories are maps, they show me where I’ve been before. These maps do not chart ownership rather it’s the strength of relationships that tells me I belong.
Carter’s creek, 2024
I’ve been chasing ghosts in the archives and running alongside stories that ripple across generations. The chance to hold this work, to stand tall knowing where my roots run deep is profound.
Sunset on the York River, 2024
This whole project has been about the ebb and flow of my family, our relationship to land, water and community. Our relationships to each other, held in memory and tradition, held with care.
I’m grateful to be here, to be home, and to be going back again.
It’s never clear what lies ahead, and all I really know is that there is no going back.
That leaves us with the present - it’s always now, always here.

I am not the same person as I was, not yet who I will become. For now I try to move forward, trusting that this path has been walked by many who came before.

This work started as way to mapping family ties, but has become much more about navigating the emotional landscapes of grief and memory than I might have expected.

Did a screening and workshop on Wednesday! I’m so happy with how it went down, the film looked great and people even got crafty with the collage activity!!
Big shout outs to everyone who touched this project, for lending their incredible talents to this work:
