Make a wish…and tie it the tree 🧚 Hıdırellez is my favorite holiday. Celebrated the night of May 5th into the 6th, it marks the moment the prophets Al-Khidr (Hızır) and Elijah (İlyas) are believed to meet on earth, bringing abundance and blessing with the arrival of spring. The holiday predates modern religion, rooted in ancient Anatolian and Mesopotamian spring rituals, observed across Turkic nations, the Balkans, and beyond under different names. Some communities following the Julian calendar celebrate on April 23, which aligns with St. George’s Day. In Türkiye, festivals take place, people light bonfires and jump the flames three times, tie wishes to rose trees (or the next closest thing), make flower crowns, and gather near water and green spaces to welcome the season. Growing up in Raleigh, my parents always had us make our wishes for the new season, and for the last few years I’ve invited friends and neighbors make their wishes, too. And every year, without fail, despite everything going on in the world, it turns out pretty much all us are wishing for the same things: peace, humanity, health.
