Tamar and I became friends in Mexico City 14 years ago while studying Fashion Design. We never imagined how many hats we would get to wear years later while building a bakery together. In 2017 our little project was born, Masa Madre started out of a passion and a longing—for good bread, and flavors from home. We started very small, baking from home, knocking on doors, and posting pictures on social media. Some of you were very confused when you came to pick up your orders and realized you were at our home 😂, and some of you thought we were this cool underground secret bakery 😎. But thanks to your support, our bakery grew so fast, and we felt how so many of you connected to us and our story ❤️ It’s been five years that we have dedicated our whole lives to this project, and we couldn’t be more proud of what we have achieved. We expanded into a small but mighty team, distributed all around Chicago and around the US, appeared in many publications, and taught many classes. And now, the time has come for us, to take a step back. I’ll stop here and say it blankly, we are closing the bakery on April 30th. This does not mean we are going away. This means Masa Madre will be evolving into a new path that will take us to new places. We don’t have the answer yet to what exactly this means, but we need the time to figure it out. The menu has officially DROPPED 🍴 We hope you’re hungry af! Curated by our chefs @ll_chefd & @reecerob17 and meant to be shared at the table - FAMILY STYLE 🫂 After our first encounter over a lovely shared meal at Kid Sister (ordering one of everything ofc!), the intention was clear from the beginning: dishes built around comfort, warmth, and the quiet coziness of winter. If there’s one thing these guys know, it’s both comfort + craft. You can expect both during our community dinner party and leave feeling deeply connected, carrying that same warmth with you. ⊱✦⊰ From artisan challah and nostalgic bites, to refined dishes layered with intention and prepared with care. Two years since we closed the bakery! 🥲Time really does move quickly. Here’s a little throwback to those five(ish) years giving it our all to this project. Lots of long days baking, learning, and figuring it all out. Life has since taken Tamar and me to opposite corners of the country, but we’re still here 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️ creating, teaching, and open to future collaborations. ✨ We’ve also got a new website and are now offering virtual classes! If you’ve been wanting to learn how to make any of our recipes, reach out, we’d love to bake with you ❤️

Our final in-person class at @gemmafoods is happening this week, and we’re feeling a mix of emotions as we wrap up this era. 🌟 💫 Each class has been an absolute blast, and connecting with all of you has been the highlight of this chapter for us.❤️ While we’ll miss these gatherings dearly, we’re excited to announce that we’ll still be offering private virtual and select in-person classes! JOIN OUR CLASS!! 03/21 6:30PM 🎭Purim is one of the most joyous celebrations of the Jewish calendar, but hamentaschen can easily be mediocre at best. Come learn how to make the most delicious dough, fill them with some Mexican and classic fillings, and take home extra dough to keep practicing at home!
