TONIGHT: folk + classical music from iconic MKE musicians Hello Death + Alicia Rytlewski at JGCA! Indie-folk group Hello Death is a staple of the Milwaukee music scene. Their live performances explore a vast cinematic range, from minimalist piano and vocal arrangements, to soaring guitars and three-part harmonies. Pulling from porch hymns and funeral dirges, they call to mind folk greats like Elizabeth Cotten, Odetta, and Leonard Cohen, as well as indie contemporaries like Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, and Nina Nastasia. @milwaukeerecord wrote, “Moody folk outfit Hello Death excels at sparse, haunting music that works its way into your bones like a winter chill. Made up of members of Altos…[Marielle Allschwang, Nathaniel Heuer, Adam Krause, Shawn Stephany, Erin Wolf]...the group doesn’t so much perform folk music as suggest it; Allschwang’s gorgeously airy alto, Heuer’s Nick Cave-esque baritone, and the group’s stripped-down instrumentation combine to form a sound that seems to pre-date music itself.” Alicia Rytlewski is a pianist, composer and vocalist from Milwaukee, Wis. Brimming with movement and wonder, her debut album, “When We Were Bears” soundtracks transition and transformation, chronicling the rhythms of the seasons and the heart alike. @uproxx called the album “a marvel,” writing, “_When We Were Bears_ captures Rytlewski’s majestic dynamism, highlighting both her careful ear for fine detail and resplendent totality.” @milwaukeerecord quoted, “This is a wonderful – and wonderfully accessible – contemporary classical album…earthy, mournful, dramatic, hypnotic, and rich.” @_interlude_hk in Hong Kong wrote, “Her ability to draw inspiration from personal connections and translate them into music has made her compositions deeply resonant.” She played her album release show at The Pabst Theater with Field Report (@fieldreportmusic ) and Collections of Colonies of Bees (@collectionsbees ). Saturday, February 7th + 7pm 926 E Center St + Milwaukee, WI $10 suggested donation jazzgallerycenterforarts.org Original music from @xor_music ‘s performance at JGCA 🌀🎺🫟🖌️😻🎵

Just going to do one big upcoming shows post here. Gonna be carrying lots of gear and remembering many songs in the first half of February. First up will be @thealtos at @xrayarcade on Friday, February 6. I will be drumming and screaming. Less than 24 hours later, @hellodeath will be at @jazzgalleryarts . I will be drumming and keeping my mouth shut for once. Unless I get a cold and can’t breathe through my nose, then I’ll keep it open to breathe through. (Nice guy but kind of a mouth breather.) A week and a day later, @golden_bookay and I will be at @cactusclubmke with @t.r.e.v.r and @joewesterlund They’re releasing a record inspired in part by their time visiting Mary Nohl’s art environment and playing in front of her work there and at the Art Preserve in Sheboygan. Marielle and I worked on a movie and “song cycle” about Mary Nohl that came out in 2019. Although those songs are Visitations songs and this is a “Lomira” show, we will probably play a bunch of those. I’m also thinking about re-editing some of our footage from Mary’s house to accompany our set or theirs. We’ll see if time permits. Also someone remind me in a week or so to get in touch with Cactus about tech specs for video there. And find out if anyone else likes my idea. The final slide is a screenshot from the Cactus page for the show where you’ll go to get your tickets and I’m including it because I got a kick out of remembering Marielle and I writing the official band bio for Lomira. It’s incredible. So much about that band is just the two of us being like, “Wait, can we do this? I guess no one is stopping us. Why not?” One sentence bio. Check. Free jazz spoken word anagram based two song single? Check. Follow that up with chopped up bird noises and then a sparse folk record? Why not. It’s very fun to be this “band.” We haven’t really talked about our set, but I think I’ll probably do guitar and some light percussing at that one. If you’ve read this far, I’m surprised but thank you!

Tuesday, April 15th ⋆˚࿔ Isabeau Waia’u Walker • Maximiano • Nathaniel Heuer ▪️▫️ $18 • 7pm • All Ages Multicultural, mulitgenre singer songwriter Isabeau Waia’u Walker has described her sound as “bright gloom,” “joy adjacent,” and an “island of broken, demented toys.” Hailing from her homeland Hawaii and having spent the latter half of her life in Oregon’s Pacific Northwest, Walker weaves observations of race, culture, gender and class together into songs about love, community and life. Walker is joined by Milwaukee indie-darling Maximiano, whose vulnerable americana-folk songs swell to cathartic, indie-rock peaks. Riding the waves of this folkestra, Maximiano sings tenderly but urgently about taking chances, missed opportunities, and reevaluating memories. Additional support by the multi-talented Nathaniel Heuer of Hello Death.
