In the American folk universe, Hello Death lies directly in the present, chanting with timeless ghosts who warn of demise and herald rebirth.

TONIGHT: folk + classical music from iconic MKE musicians Hello Death + Alicia Rytlewski at JGCA! Indie-folk group Hello Death is a staple of the Milwaukee music scene. Their live performances explore a vast cinematic range, from minimalist piano and vocal arrangements, to soaring guitars and three-part harmonies. Pulling from porch hymns and funeral dirges, they call to mind folk greats like Elizabeth Cotten, Odetta, and Leonard Cohen, as well as indie contemporaries like Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, and Nina Nastasia. @milwaukeerecord wrote, “Moody folk outfit Hello Death excels at sparse, haunting music that works its way into your bones like a winter chill. Made up of members of Altos…[Marielle Allschwang, Nathaniel Heuer, Adam Krause, Shawn Stephany, Erin Wolf]...the group doesn’t so much perform folk music as suggest it; Allschwang’s gorgeously airy alto, Heuer’s Nick Cave-esque baritone, and the group’s stripped-down instrumentation combine to form a sound that seems to pre-date music itself.” Alicia Rytlewski is a pianist, composer and vocalist from Milwaukee, Wis. Brimming with movement and wonder, her debut album, “When We Were Bears” soundtracks transition and transformation, chronicling the rhythms of the seasons and the heart alike. @uproxx called the album “a marvel,” writing, “_When We Were Bears_ captures Rytlewski’s majestic dynamism, highlighting both her careful ear for fine detail and resplendent totality.” @milwaukeerecord quoted, “This is a wonderful – and wonderfully accessible – contemporary classical album…earthy, mournful, dramatic, hypnotic, and rich.” @_interlude_hk in Hong Kong wrote, “Her ability to draw inspiration from personal connections and translate them into music has made her compositions deeply resonant.” She played her album release show at The Pabst Theater with Field Report (@fieldreportmusic ) and Collections of Colonies of Bees (@collectionsbees ). Saturday, February 7th + 7pm 926 E Center St + Milwaukee, WI $10 suggested donation jazzgallerycenterforarts.org Original music from @xor_music ‘s performance at JGCA 🌀🎺🫟🖌️😻🎵
