At tonight’s event @cunyslu , Commissioner Levine and other labor leaders across NYC discussed Enforcing the Affordability Agenda in this new era. DCWP is proud to be a strongarm against predatory corporations and franchisees. Complying with the laws New Yorkers fought hard for is no longer optional.

Yesterday we kicked off NYC’s Free Tax Prep season. That means filing your taxes at zero cost, keeping every dollar of your refund, and not getting ripped off by for-profit companies.    Nearly half of all New Yorkers qualify. Get help—virtually or in person—at nyc.gov/TaxPrep

Last week alongside @nycmayor , DCWP announced a final rule banning junk fees on hotel stays, protecting both consumers coming to New York City, and New Yorkers traveling elsewhere around the country. You should know exactly how much your vacation will cost when you get to check out, not once you finally get to check in. Learn more at nyc.gov/DCWP

May is mental health awareness month 💙🧠 In NYC, workers no longer need to choose between caring for their mental health and their job. Most workers get 40 to 56 hours of paid Protected Time Off to care for their mental health and more. Learn your rights at nyc.gov/Workers

Mabel Ping-Hua Lee immigrated to New York from Guangzhou in 1905. A brilliant student and strategist, she quickly engaged with the fight for women’s suffrage, subverting racial stereotypes with her participation in the Woman Suffrage Procession of 1912, one of the first large scale civil rights demonstrations in U.S. history. When the Nineteenth Amendment was passed, granting white women the right to vote, Lee continued her advocacy work, opposing the racist Chinese Exclusion Act and demanding justice for Asian American women.

Buying a used car shouldn’t come with a trunk full of unexpected costs. We’ve secured nearly $130,000 from used auto dealer, Honda of the Bronx, for bait-and-switch tactics and over 350 violations of NYC’s Consumer Protection Law. Buying a car is one of the biggest financial decisions families make. Consumers deserve transparency, honesty, and accurate pricing—especially as car affordability becomes increasingly unreachable. While A/C is a helpful tool for keeping cool, DCWP reminds you to #ShutTheFrontDoor (and windows!) to protect the planet and your electric bill this year In NYC, businesses are required to keep doors and windows closed while air conditioning is on. If you see a store letting that cool air go to waste, let us know at nyc.gov/DCWP

At this afternoon’s Community and Ethnic Media Roundtable, Commissioner Levine announced the results of DCWP’s recent enforcement sweep of Immigration Assistance Service Providers (ISPs) throughout the five boroughs. After conducting over 270 inspections, Brooklyn was found to have the highest violation rate. Also commonly referred to as “notarios,” ISPs are people or businesses that charge fees for any kind of immigration-related services. It's important for immigrant New Yorkers to know that ISPs are not lawyers, cannot provide legal advice or assistance, and are not typically accredited or recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice.
