"Our strategy was to experiment with new organizing approaches that treat mass scale union organizing more like a social movement than building a guerrilla army." Read the latest by Chris Brooks in the latest issue of #NewLaborForum (link in bio).
The CWOP team from @cunyslu spent time with the worker owners of Sea and Soil @sea.soil.coop , a worker-owned sandwich shop in downtown Brooklyn living out their second iteration on 388 Atlantic Avenue.
We met them in a whirlwind of construction, soft openings, and recipe testing. They are now officially open to the public! If you’re in the solidarity economy space, you may have already had the good luck of tasting their sandwiches at an event they catered.
In addition to being a worker cooperative, they also practice a sliding scale model upholding their value that food is a human right.
Special thanks to Gaby, Nilda, Noah, Carmen, Jaejoon, Kevin and Ella for being down to let a camera in on the action and for being a part of a network of folks across the city who believe in feeding the people. 🥖And an additional thanks to The Working World @theworkingworld . 🥪
Go visit, dream, and strategize (over delicious food) with friends for a more equitable NYC.
Many in the solidarity economy support cooperative efforts and those efforts need continued checks and balances. REI, a respected consumer cooperative, is making the work lives of some of their unionized employees more difficult. Union members at REI are asking patrons to stand with the workers and to not shop at the retailer from May 15th-May 25th during REI’s busiest sale of the year.
According to workers, management at REI have illegally implemented drastic cuts to union workers’ wages and benefits, they have systematically dismantled democracy across the co-op, made it harder for union workers to get healthcare, and stayed silent on widespread discrimination against workers of color and extensively documented labor rights violations. You can learn more about the REI Union @reiunion and what REI workers are facing by visiting the link in our linktree!
