Monthly Co-op Highlight: Sea & Soil 🥪 This month we are showing love to our neighbors at Sea & Soil, a worker-owned sandwich shop & catering team located at 📍388 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn. From selling $5 sandwiches at park pop-ups… to opening their first brick & mortar in 2023, their journey is powered by community, patience, and collective ownership! “Being a worker-owner means a level of autonomy and responsibility that I otherwise would not have… I feel pride and joy and a commitment I have not felt in any other job.” — Sea & Soil worker-owner Almost Everything on their menu is made in-house, and you can taste the difference. Customers rave about the quality. The fresh, locally sourced ingredients, house-baked naturally leavened bread, and simple, thoughtful, healthy food is done right. They are proving that you can serve amazing food while keeping profits in the hands of the people doing the work. They also offer a sliding scale pay model, making their food more accessible while staying true to their values ✊🏽 From the very beginning the TWW team loved working with them through every step of our process. Did We mention they are our neighbors, being in the same building, and having them cater some of our events is a plus. Sea & Soil is a worker-owned sandwich shop built on a simple but powerful idea: 👉 the people doing the work should share in the ownership From house-baked, naturally leavened bread to globally inspired ingredients made in-house, the are creating food that is thoughtful, accessible, and rooted in community, including a sliding scale model to make sure more people can enjoy it. 🌟 This month we are highlighting Brooklyn Packers 🌟 A worker-owned, majority Black owned and led food sourcing, packing, and distribution cooperative powering Brooklyn food sovereignty. 🍎🚚 Who they are: @brooklynpackers forms a vital conduit between regional farms and the city, organizing within a solidarity economy as anti-capitalists under capitalism. In practice, that means: equal salary structure and one-member/one-vote governance; sourcing from small, sustainable producers with a preference for worker-owned co-ops and women/queer/POC-owned farms; and sliding-scale pricing that expands dignified access to fresh, culturally relevant food. You will find produce bags packed with seasonal staples, local honey, and a rotating selection of @equalexchange products, plus other values-aligned pantry goods and farm products that keep dollars circulating locally. Big wins & what’s next: 🧊 USDA NYS Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Grant to expand storage capacity in Brooklyn,building a new cold-storage facility in East New York and upgrading the Chester Agricultural Center hub. 🤝 Non-extractive finance with The Working World (TWW): Another chapter in a great partnership: TWW is financing a new line of credit for Brooklyn Packers, who we have made investments with in the past and they have reliably repaid those investments and continue to deliver impact. 🏛️ Civic collaboration: working with local elected officials and community partners to tackle food insecurity across NYC. The Working World had a great time partnering with The Morningside Heights Community Coalition and NYU Stern to host the Morningside Heights Community Enterprise Summit🎓✨ Together, we educated  small businesses in Morningside Heights on converting a traditional business to worker-ownership and explored how they can strengthen their operations, preserve community legacy, and build long-term stability. From inspiring panels to real-world success stories, the summit showcased the power of collaboration in shaping a more inclusive local economy.
