Industrial design education honestly hasn’t evolved much in the last decade. Many schools are still teaching outdated content that doesn’t reflect current trends, emerging technologies, or what the industry actually expects today. Yet tuition at some of the biggest “name brand” design institutions are still high. At some point, you have to ask yourself: are you truly getting the value out of your education that you’re paying for?
So naturally, we started looking at the data from some of these “name brand” institutions to compare where Offsite stands. No, we’re not a fully built-out university—we don’t have campuses, stadiums, sports teams, or massive buildings. But what we do offer is curriculum and programming that directly reflects what many industrial design programs are trying to teach today, often with more current industry insight and accessibility.
So the question becomes… why not Offsite?

Today we celebrate National Industrial Design Day.
Industrial Design is fun, exciting, and always evolving. At times it’s unpredictable—and even unfair—but it’s also deeply creative, visual, and tangible. It’s an experience, a strategy, a point of view; something that can feel abstract while remaining grounded in the real world.
So, how do you define industrial design? ✨
Lately I’ve been deep-diving into Apple’s soft-goods muscle—the quiet, intentional layer of their ecosystem that so many people overlook. We talk a lot about their hardware, their materials, their finishes, their precision…but their soft goods are just as calculated, just as thoughtful, and honestly, just as beautiful.
And this reflection comes at the perfect time. Apple recently collaborated with Japanese fashion powerhouse Issey Miyake to release the iPhone Pocket, an accessory that feels both surprising and completely inevitable. A lot of people saw this as a “new direction,” but if you know Apple’s history, the Miyake influence has been there for decades—most famously woven into the very identity of Steve Jobs through the iconic Miyake turtlenecks.
This isn’t a random partnership. It’s a continuation of a design dialogue that’s been happening quietly, intentionally, and with purpose. Apple understands the power of soft goods as extensions of the body, of culture, of fashion—beautiful accents that complete the hardware.
Don’t underestimate their intentions. Their execution in this space is only getting stronger, and honestly, it’s exciting to watch.

We had the pleasure of bringing a brother from another mother — Advanced Design bestie, Offsite champion, and industrial designer at Whipsaw — Carlos Terminel to Chicago, to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, to talk to SAIC IDSA students about “the hard way” and the 13 things he wished he’d known before graduating.
It’s a tough time in the industry right now, and Carlos showed up with real advice and real insights. God bless this man. Thank you for being a beacon in our community.

Finally back from what has truly been one of the most defining moments of my teaching career — the opportunity to teach in a place as culturally rich and inspiring as Japan. To kick off the year, we leaned into discomfort in the best way possible, taking on our most ambitious challenge yet by partnering with our friends in Japan to bring Offsite there.
We created experiences together. We shared space with new faces. We ate together, shopped together, and stayed fully present together. From thoughtfully curated museum visits to design studios, company tours, and fabrication and manufacturing plants — every moment was experienced as Offsite Japan.

For those interested in Offsite Japan, this is a thoughtful overview of how it differs from our regular Offsite programming.
Offsite Japan is an entirely different experience—one that has the potential to be truly life-changing and trajectory-shifting. We’re incredibly excited for those who choose to join us.
