One of 1+1+’s first projects, Wandering Courtyard House, is featured in the @latimes this week! Co-designed with architect De Peter Yi, structural engineer Halle Doenitz, and artist Yi Kai, the project explores the intersection of architecture and art through a cross-cultural design lens. A conversation between the American backyard and the Asian courtyard, the half-circle wraparound deck creates in-between spaces hovering between indoors and out, looking inward and outward. While the street-facing facade maintains a veiled presence, referencing its typological roots, the backyard opens wide to expansive views of downtown LA. The design subverts residential zoning setbacks—not as limitations, but as opportunities—playfully transforming regulatory constraints into sources of spatial possibility. Throughout, the house reimagines typical residential framing into material assemblies as sculptural elements: an outdoor spiral stair and a half-moon porch balustrade become occupiable sculptures - a spatial choreography that invites all to wander… Thank you @latimes @lisaboone99 for featuring the project! The maple-clad vaulted ceiling in our Foothill ADU utilizes the pitch of the existing garage’s roof. At either side of the central space, 8’ ceiling heights allow for attic storage space above. Swipe for before and construction progress photos. 🏠🔨🏗️ We’re thrilled that @_kreggy_ has written about this project for @dwellmagazine — link in bio! Swipe to close the curtains! Integrated curtains on either side of the Cal King bed in our Foothill ADU create a bed/room within the studio unit layout. Both curtains can be drawn to conceal the bed while guests use the living space, or the curtains can be partially drawn to achieve increased privacy from the front elevation windows 🏠🔨🏗️ We’re thrilled that @_kreggy_ has written about this project for @dwellmagazine — link in bio! The layout of our Foothill ADU is organized by a functional entry-closet-kitchen spine at the east side of the plan. Like a corridor but without the enclosing walls, the spine separates utility space from living and sleeping space. Swipe for a before photo and floor plan. 🏠🔨🏗️ We’re thrilled that @_kreggy_ has written about this project for @dwellmagazine — link in bio! We designed the front elevation of our Foothill ADU with the goal of concealing its history as a garage. Rather than one large opening where the garage door once was, three windows give the ADU a unique domestic identity, while maintaining privacy between the new ADU and the existing house. The corner entrance to our Foothill ADU was designed to provide a wider view of the Verdugo Mountain backdrop AND a micro front porch. This lovely Los Angeles home is now complete and looking for a new owner. A comprehensive interior renovation and rear addition helped bring it up to today's market standards for prospective buyers. The team included @nardihaus and several others. Here's hoping a new family finds it and falls for it's charm! #exteriorrenovation #newpainting #architecture #realestate

Leveraging the steeply sloped existing roof of this house remodel and addition, the team was able to link together the living, dining & kitchen areas into one spacious entertaining area with high vaulted ceilings and an open floor plan!

“Big Roof” was nominated for @archdaily building of the year! Please support 1+1+ and our collaborators by voting for the project at the link in our profile 💖🌈 Big Roof is an oversized garden pergola designed by 1+1+ Architects and HD Structural that hosts dining and events for @coriander_det , a farm-to-table restaurant located along a canal in the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan. Extending Coriander Kitchen & Farm’s dining space into the outdoors, the structure inspires an open relationship with environmental conditions at its waterside site. A supersized garden pergola nicknamed after its most prominent feature, Big Roof collects rainwater for a rain garden onsite. The corrugated, planar-roof form echoes those of the marina, and sits as lightly as possible on six steel columns, maximizing the flexibility of happenings below. Nine custom-designed triangular trusses, built of nominal lumber and standard @strongtie connections, become the framework for a clear, polycarbonate roof that opens up views to the constantly changing skies above. Through grounding the project in its environment, Big Roof creates a multi-seasonal, sensorial experience for all to enjoy: during the winter, the structure glows like lantern, illuminating the surrounding landscape. In the spring, the plastic facade is removed and dining activities spill out onto the canal side, and the birds and bees are welcomed under Big Roof. Blurring the boundary between the indoors and outdoors and vice versa, the project reaches out to embrace its unique surroundings with a continuous gravel ground that extends beyond building envelope. Pilotis and a removable façade create an open floor plan that explores architecture’s relationship with site as a literal extension of architecture.
