A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to be part of the More Than a Game: The Fight For Gender Equality and Inclusion in Sports Symposium at UBC Law School.
It was an incredible day to hear from many people challenging the anti-trans laws that are being passed globally, but specifically in the United States and Alberta. We were able to hear more about how misinformation is used to spread fear and hysteria about trans people in sports.
Harrison Browne (@hbrowne24 ) was one of the panelists and as the moderator Max shared, his new book (Let Us Play: Winning the Battle for Gender Diversity in Sports), co-authored with his sister Rachel Browne, is a crash course in misinformation about trans people. Read about Harrison’s experience as a trans athlete along with stories from others on the front lines of challenging anti-trans laws.
Rather than tackling the real issues of racism, sexism, and classism in sports, the focus on trans athletes, amongst other things, allows those in power to control the ideas of what a woman is and what femininity can be in the guise of safety and access, which ends up affecting women and girls, as well.
Sports can be inclusive to all!

The Masked Cowboy… 🤠
This role was an absolute dream that I still carry with me today. It was intimidating at first to play a cowboy. I wondered if I could pull off the quiet confidence, the rugged masculinity we see throughout movie history.
But the way this character expressed himself through clothing and song really inspired me to open up my definition of masculine. So thank you Masked Cowboy! I’m grateful for the moustache you gave me and the confidence to wear the cowboy boots in my closet. 🕺🏻

When I saw Lyft stand up and help the trans community get around during the driver licence revoking in Kansas, it meant so much to me. So when I had an opportunity to collaborate with a company that supports my community when we need it the most it was an immediate yes!
I was able to head down to NYC and reunite with my 3 loves: Hockey, @ErikaLawler2 and Heated Rivalry ;) Being able to connect with old friends, make new ones and celebrate this awesome Sports Romance community in a historic venue like Madison Square Garden was such a joy! Extra plus, I got to watch hockey with some of my Heated Rivalry fam with @nadinebhabs and @robsgk .
Seeing the Ilya and Shane jerseys fill up the suite, made me realize that these characters symbolize inclusion in a space that hasn’t always made folks part of my community feel welcome. Hockey fans are shifting and it’s really lovely to see folks take up their space unapologetically.
So thank you Lyft for bringing us together and getting me to my next adventure safely.
